Bird on a wire : the life and art of Bill Taplin / location photography Andrew Montgomery ; art photography Robert Cotton. First edition, flat-signed by the artist to title page. Marlow: Studio Fine Art Publications, 2007. Hardback, near fine, in unclipped dustjacket. Grey boards with gilt lettering to front. Binding strong and tight. Endpapers illustrated with coastal photograph. Frontispiece lioncut by James Dodds. B/w photograph of artist. 224pp., 250 colour and b/w illustrations. Contents clean and bright. Taplin's bird sculptures embody our longed for harmony with the natural world, his obsession with birds extends beyond their beauty to their endurance, intuition and symbolic loyalty. Mostly shorebirds of various species, each bird is composed to capture their specific habits and character. His simplified, stylised forms seem to breathe each bird's very essence. Sculpted from found driftwood, which he forages from coasts and estuaries around the world, Taplin's birds are therefore enriched by previous lives. Weathered by time and the elements, each piece of wood bears marks that enhance his design, suggesting the outline of a wing or layers of plumage . Hardcover. Condition: As New. As new copy of the Limited Edition lacking the slipcase. Small mark at the top of the half title page. Signed by the author. Color images represent the work of 100 artists from the late 18th century to the present. Olsen traces the 300-year history of bird art in Australia, from the crudely illustrated records of the earliest European voyages of discovery to the diversity of artwork available today. Illustrated in color with over 250 images representing 94 artists. Some are well-known, others are published for the first time. All have been carefully selected for their merit, be it ornithological, historical or artistic. The book links the greats of yesterday - including Ferdinand Bauer, Edward Lear, George Raper, John Lewin, the Goulds and the mysterious Port Jackson Painter - with some of the finest wildlife artists working in Australia today, many with an intimate knowledge of the birds in the field. Large original Larry Bird signed Upper Deck 1992-93 art card. Glossy finish card depicting Larry Bird in various uniforms with basketballs in hand. Boldly signed by Bird in black felt tip at the bottom center. Mounted. In near fine condition. The entire piece measures 8 inches by 10 inches. Larry Bird (b. 1956) is an American basketball icon whose career with the Boston Celtics helped define the NBAâs 1980s ascendancy, combining elite shooting, playmaking, and competitive intelligence into a model of modern forward play. He led the Celtics to three NBA championships (1981, 1984, 1986) and was twice named Finals MVP, while also winning three consecutive league MVP awards (1984â"86), a rare achievement that underscores his dominance within a golden era of the sport. Beyond his playing career, Bird remained influential as an NBA Coach of the Year (1998) and Executive of the Year (2012) with the Indiana Pacers, and he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame both individually and as part of the 1992 Olympic âDream Team.â His philanthropic presence in Indiana is carried through the Larry J. and Dinah M. Bird Family Foundation, which supports regional and civic causes, and his legacy has been further institutionalized by the opening of the free public Larry Bird Museum in Terre Haute in 2024.
