This is a short history of the Black Watch, one of the finest fighting forces in the world. It has been engaged in virtually every worldwide conflict for the last three centuries. Named after the dark tartan of the soldiers' kilts, its unique formation - raised from loyal Scottish clans in the wake of the 1715 Jacobite rebellion - make it the oldest Highland regiment. As part of the British army, their first battle abroad was in Flanders in 1745 but the regiment soon moved to North America to fight the French, and then shared the capture of Montreal, the Windward Islands and Martinique. The American War of Independence saw the regiment once again in America, fighting horrific battles and eventually storming Fort Washington in 1776. Since then the regiment has held its own from Egypt to the Napoleonic Wars, from the Crimea to the Indian mutiny, from both World Wars to Iraq. It was published with the approval of the officers commanding the 1st and 2nd Battalions, and the facts have been compiled, for the most part, from the Regimental Records of the 1st and 2nd Battalions, an of the Perthshire Militia, from the official histories of the 42nd and 73rd, and from Stewart's 'Sketches of the Highlanders.' The author is not stated but it is known to be General Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope GCB GCMG CIE DSO (1874-1947), a British soldier and colonial administrator, His father was Major General A.G. Wauchope who, commanded the Highland Brigade on his death in battle in 1899. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some light soiling on the boards. The top corners and spine ends are bumped and there is a patch of fading near the bottom of the spine where a small old label may have been removed. There is a dent on the top edge of the front board that has caused a little damage to the board. The contents are tight and clean with some foxing on the first and last few pages, including the title-page, and there are a few light foxing marks elsewhere within the book. A few of the pages have short notes written in pencil on the margin. The half-title page has been flat signed 'A.G. Wauchope' by the author. PLEASE NOTE: Extra postage may be required to cover tracking. Signed by the author.

Add to basketFirst edition hard back binding in publisher's original camel cloth covered boards, blocked and lettered silver back, tawny brown end papers. 8vo. 9½'' x 6ĵ''. With the war drawing to a close and victory in Europe declared, the Black Watch's focus moved to identifying ex SS men and war criminals on the run. Whilst manning a checkpoint near Bremerhaven they took various prisoners and, on checking the guardroom, Renouf noticed one in particular seemed odd. A small man, dressed as a postman but sporting an eye patch, amulet round his neck and fancy watch, he was identified as a sergeant with the secret field police. After meekly handing over his valuables to a guard he was taken for questioning. It was then he demanded to speak to the camp commandant, a former Edinburgh policeman, and declared 'Ich bin Herr Heinrich Himmler.' The SS and Gestapo leader, the world's most wanted man, died soon afterwards, biting on a cyanide phial. Contains (vi), 312 pp with 6 maps and monochrome archive photographs throughout.
