Hardcover. Condition: F+. Dust Jacket Condition: dj. First Edition. Signed by Author. Fine+ in Fine+ dust jacket. A fine copy in a like DJ, signed by Oates. "In this striking, enormously affecting novel, Joyce Carol Oates tells the story of two very different and yet intimately linked American families. Luther Dunphy is an ardent Evangelical who envisions himself as acting out God's will when he assassinates an abortion provider in his small Ohio town while Augustus Voorhees, the idealistic but self-regarding doctor who is killed, leaves behind a wife and children scarred and embittered by grief. In her moving, insightful portrait, Joyce Carol Oates fully inhabits the perspectives of two interwoven families whose destinies are defined by their warring convictions and squarely-but with great empathy-confronts an intractable, abiding rift in American society. A Book of American Martyrs is a stunning, timely depiction of an issue hotly debated on a national stage but which makes itself felt most lastingly in communities torn apart by violence and hatred. No Binding. Condition: Very Good. 19.5" x 27.5". Incredible original painting depicting the fears of persecution and martyrdom accompanying the private reading of the Scriptures during the Reformation. The present painting seems to have always been known by the title, The Forbidden Book. It was published in Bible Readings for the Home Circle in an introductory chapter on the history of translation and persecution during the Reformation because the private reading of the Scriptures. Schepp's Photographs of the World (1891) describes the painting as representing a private library, the father and daughter eagerly devouring the contents of the Bible. Unexpected foot steps are heard; hence the frightened look of both, for in those days, reading the Bible was punished by death. This is a great opportunity to own an original painting of the standard images of the 19th century used to represent the state of private bible reading during the reformation. The present example is a late 19th century paining 'after' the original by Karel Ooms (1845-1900) used probably as the basis for one of the book illustrations of the period. Shelf.
