From the Hamilton family library. Dialogue format with amusing illustrations. Foxed throughout. Original tooled and gilt illustrated cloth binding, stained along spine and worn heavily at all edges. Chipped at head and heel. This copy with James Alexander's bookplate (third son). His wife has written in "Mrs." above his name. Mary Morris Hamilton had a distinguished ancestry as well. Mary was older sister of Lewis Gouverneur Morris (1808?1900), the granddaughter of Richard Morris (1730?1810), Chief Justice of the New York Supreme Court, the great-granddaughter of Lewis Morris, an early colonial governor of New Jersey, and the grandniece of Lewis Morris (1726?1798), a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The family were New Yorkers and participated in the full legendary life of the city.
