Les scènes sont croquées sur le vif, le ton grinçant, mais le tout vise juste ; on saisit à quel point ce voyageur nordique a bien saisi le tempérament français, quand il fait suivre, dans sa longue énumération au titre, "wie [man] stiehlt, raubt" de "politisirt" : tout est dit.Adolf Glassbrenner (1810-1876) est doué d'un véritable sens de l'humour, ce qui vaut la peine d'être noté. An engineer in the Corps of Bridges and Roads, Jean-Charles Adolphe Alphand (1817-1891) participated in the renovation of the city of Paris that took place during the reign of Napoleon III under the direction of the famed Baron Haussmann. Among other projects, he was primarily responsible for the design of the Bois de Boulogne, Bois de Vincennes, Gardens of Champs-Elysees, Luxembourg Gardens, Parc Monceau, Parc Montsouris, Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, Square des Batignolles, and Jardin des Plantes du Mans. This is an oversized or heavy book, which requires additional postage for international delivery outside the US.

First edition. Marbled front free endpaper to Vol. II detached but present; a few spots of inoffensive scattered foxing to the text volume; the lovely plates are fine. Bindings rubbed at corners with a few minor scuffs. Considerable additional postage will be required: these are two gigantic and extremely heavy volumes.

Optical view heightened in watercolor, depicting a view of the Boulevards of Paris taken from the Porte du Temple. Optical views, also called views, perspectives or "mondo nuovo", are engravings that were very fashionable between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. They were intended to be viewed through a set of several mirrors or by means of a Zograscope, an instrument consisting of a mirror and a lens. Optical views can be considered as the precursors of three-dimensional images and stereoscopes which enjoyed great success from the 19th century onwards. Optical views seem to appear in the 1740s and were parlor entertainments. The process was first developed in Paris, then London and finally in Germany and sought to represent - in an idealized manner - the most famous panoramas and landscapes of East and West. Two pale corner dampstains not affecting the engraving. Fine impression with very fresh colors. *.

No. 76 of 100 copies issued. 4to. 28.5 by 25.5 cm. 19, [3] pages, followed by 54 leaves with Sarg's pencil drawn caricatures of each of the expedition's participants, including a self-portrait. Architects included William Van Alen, the architect of the Chrysler Building; Mott Schmidt, a leading light of American Georgian style architecture and the designer of some of the most prestigious apartment buildings in New York; William Parsons, known for his work in the Philippines after it became an American territory; Kenneth Murchinson, the founder of the Beaux-Arts Ball and known particularly for his designs of grand train stations; Eli Jacques Kahn; etc. etc. Others include the book illustrator and progenitor of an artistic dynasty N.C. Wyeth; artist George Wharton Edwards; the artist and muralist Arthur Covey; etc. These reproduced drawings are on a fairly heavy card stock, with their versos entirely blank. The paginated portion of the book or album is mostly devoted to a retelling of the adventures and antics of this distinguished, self-styled motley group of mostly architects, with many b/w photographs and a few illustrations (one a cartoon) to help with the narrative. Also two pages render the musical score of the song, "The Pompiers", a theme of sort for the tour. Given that the expedition was entirely men, one should have an idea of the puerile delights enjoyed by the participants. The visit to Paris was for a good many a homecoming or sorts, as The Ecole des Beaux-Arts was a place they had once studied. And we will add that the Beaux-Arts style was at one time very much associated with New York, hard though it might be for people today to realize, at the turn-of-the-twentieth century. In fact, the style was also then considered the New York School. Rare -- obviously, only 100 copies issued. Several institutional copies listed on OCLC First Search; none in commerce on the date of this listing. While one doesn't necessarily think of Tony Sarg as a portrait artist, he not only designed puppets but also some of his best known work was of New York landmarks and buildings. Thus there is a logic to his being a part of this mission. Plus, we will add, the proof is in the pudding -- his caricatures have panache and polish. The leatherette has minor grit, which we believe can be removed with effort. This takes the form of dark brown gook but also white fleks. Prelim blank also has film of soiling. Otherwise, tight and essentially clean.

Rare iteration of this attractive map, untraced institutionally, originally published in 1782; all early versions are scarce. This is an excellent copy, housed in its original case. The Place Vendôme includes the imposing Colone de la Grande Armee, commemorating Napoleon's great victory at Austerlitz in 1805, which was constructed on his orders and completed in 1810. The nascent Rue de Rivoli is shown, laid out in the year of publication, confined to the north side of the Tuileries. Also constructed in 1811 was the rue de Castiglione, connecting the rue de Rivoli with the Place Vendôme, and the passage Montesquieu, one of the new arcades, dry and well lit, where Parisians could shelter from the weather and loiter at shops and cafes. Folding engraved map (1,110 x 690 mm), hand-coloured in outline in red, blue, green, and yellow, 24 panels mounted on linen, as issued. Housed in original blue slipcase, panelled in gilt, red label lettered in gilt. Light staining, verso a little soiled, slipcase worn. A very good example.
