Between 1873 and 1883 he wrote a series of natural history papers about Nuriootpa, "Notable Native Plants about Ardrossan"', and numerous others, such as those present here. 'In March 1883 Tepper was appointed natural history collector at the South Australian Museum; in 1888 he was promoted to entomologist, numismatist and librarian there. Many of his entomological papers were later to appear in the Garden and Field and in the Transactions of the Royal Society of South Australia, which society he joined in 1878; he was an honorary fellow from 1912, and was sometime chairman of its field naturalists' section. In 1879 he became a fellow of the Linnean Society of London and a life member of the Society of Science Letters and Art (London), receiving their medal in 1898' ('Australian Dictionary of Biography'). First separate edition, printed following the appearance of Crowe's essay in the Proceedings of the Royal Artillery Institution. A second edition followed two months later and both are rare, WorldCat showing a combined total of four copies. Major, later Brigadier-General, John Henry Verinder Crowe RA (1862-1948) was the chief instructor in military history and topography at Woolwich and then commandant of the Royal Military College of Canada. During the First World War, he commanded the Royal Artillery in German East Africa under Jan Smuts. In this pamphlet, he remarks on the skill with which generals Roberts and Stewart advanced without long supply lines and the systematic use of heliograph signalling in the field for the first time. "The losses we suffered, excepting the disaster at Maiwand, were comparatively insignificant. The operations are known as the Afghan 'war', for want of a better word, but 'punitive expedition' would more correctly describe them" (p. 26). Quarto (220 x 145 mm), pp. 26. With 2 folding sketch maps, sketch maps in text. Contemporary dark green pebble-grain cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, original wrappers bound in. Bound for one Captain R. Drake, with his ownership signature on several other pamphlets and his name on a binder's pencilled job ticket bound at end. Couple of pencilled annotations. Binding a little worn, wrappers toned, first map creased where incorrectly refolded: very good.
