B/w photographs & illustrations, bibliography. Signed by Fred Buller and Fred J. Taylor. Edges browned, but intact second-hand paperback. Good-plus. "Four of the leading authorities on freshwater fishing - each one a household name - have finally got together to produce a book with the sole aim of helping anglers catch more fish." This book "assumes a basic knowledge of tackle and methods. and concentrates instead on the skills and the application of recent scientific innovations which in the opinion of the authors are least known - or least understood - and of most use". Includes a bibliography giving the authors' favourite angling books as well as those written by them. Chapters include: 'Secrets' of success; The influence of the weather; Feeding habits; Senses; Intelligence; Hookbaits; Groundbait; Groundbaiting devices; Rods; Reels; Lines; Hooks, leads and swivels; Nets; The link-ledger; Bite-indicators; Night fishing; [Float] design and application; Some finer points of float fishing in running water; Special floats and their uses (the trotter; the shot-dragger; the ducker; the wire avon; stret-pegging; aspects of lift-fishing; the windbeater; the zoomer; the cocktail); Float-ledgering; Paternostering; Spinning; Trailing; Fly-fishing; An ingenious method. .

"Falkus and Buller's Freshwater Fishing is a classic: a book which no one with an intelligent interest in angling can afford to be without . A book of tackle and techniques, with some notes on various fishes; fish recipes; fishing safety and other sundry matters". An encyclopaedic work encompassing all aspects of British freshwater fishing. The authors' passion for research, their love of angling, even their avowed interest in the culinary qualities of their catch, seem to me a healthier approach to the subject than that of many writers of today, whose over-emphasis on technical and conservation aspects seem to take much of the excitement and spontaneity of fishing. Part I covers fishes, Part II rigs, tackles and methods of capture, with some reference to American ideas. .

William James Herbert Hayens (1861-1944) was an English novelist and editor. He is probably best known for his adventure stories for boys that have been compared in style to the works of George Alfred Henty. This book is a story of the Second Boer War. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with gold titling and an illustration on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the boards and some light staining on the rear board. The spine ends are lightly bumped and there is heavier bumping to the top front corner. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few light marks and a little scattered foxing. There is also foxing to the fore edge of the text block and on some pages this has seeped a little way into the fore margin. The back of the second front free endpaper has been inscribed by the author to his son thus: ""Kenneth" From His Father, Herbert Hayens. Christmas 1901.". Signed by Author(s).
