Hardcover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. The 1977 Easton Press edition of ""Candide or Optimism"" by Voltaire is a collector's edition, featuring a hardcover binding with various design elements. This edition is known for its high-quality production, including features such as gilt-stamped decorations, gilded edges, and illustrations by Sylvain Sauvage. The book is part of the "100 Greatest Books Ever Written"" series, highlighting its significance and the care taken in its production. Candide, or Optimism is a satirical novel written by Voltaire, a philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment, first published in 1759. The novella has been widely translated, with English versions titled Candide: or, All for the Best (1759); Candide: or, The Optimist (1762); and Candide: Optimism (1947). A young man, Candide, lives a sheltered life in an Edenic paradise, being indoctrinated with Leibnizian optimism by his mentor, Professor Pangloss. This lifestyle is abruptly ended, followed by Candide's slow and painful disillusionment as he witnesses and experiences great hardships in the world. This copy is in like-new condition.
