Contact seller5-star sellerFirst edition, stated first printing of the sequel of Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat. Octavo, original illustrated boards, pictorial endpapers. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author opposite the title page, "For Blair Sanchez with Best Wishes - Dr. Seuss." Near fine in a very good dust jacket. The year after Theodore Geisel,… better known as Dr. Seuss, broke new ground in childrenâs books with The Cat in the Hat, he brought back the immediately popular characterâ"with 26 little cats under his red-and-white stovepipe, not to mention the mysterious âVoomââ"for a new madcap adventure. The title was the second from Beginner Books, Geiselâs own imprint at Random House; in very little time, as that lineâs identifying logo, âthe Catâs image would become synonymous with learning to readâ (Cohen, 324).

Contact seller5-star sellerFirst edition, first issue of Dr. Seuss' classic work. Octavo, original illustrated unlaminated boards. Inscribed by the author opposite the title page, "for Chris Brandon (aged 11) with Best Wishes Dr. Seuss." All first issue points present: price of 200/200 on the dust jacket, no mention of the "Beginner Books" series on the r…ear panel, and has four paragraphs of educator's reviews on rear panel. Book contains a single signature and 61 pages with a message on final page before end paper contained in an outline of the cat's hat and head. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light professional restoration to the extremities, recipient's bookplate to the pastedown. Rare and desirable, inscribed first issues are very uncommon. "A person's a person, no matter how small," Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, would say. "Children want the same things we want. To laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained and delighted." "The Cat in the Hat was so successful that Random House, publisher of all the Dr. Seuss books since 1937, created a special division, Beginner Books, with the Cat in the Hat as the logo and Dr. Seuss as president of the division" (Dr. Seuss from Then to Now, 45). "This extraordinary writer has done more to foster literacy in children than most because he manages to combine lunacy with sanity, fun with learning, and quality with exuberant readability" (Joseph Connolly). It was the basis for the 2003 film starring Mike Myers in the title role of the Cat in the Hat, and Dakota Fanning as Sally.

Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. First edition, early printing. This first edition, early printing, was inscribed by Dr. Seuss for a young mother in 1963 at a bookshop one mile from Dr. Seuss's home in La Jolla, California. It was acquired by us directly from the person for whom this book was purchased, to whom it was inscribed, and whose family enjo…yed this book for three generations. This copy is inscribed on the lower left corner of the front free endpaper verso in four lines "for | JiLL | with Best Wishes | Dr. Seuss" with a characteristic Dr. Seuss squiggle between the valediction and signature. ConditionAs Dr. Seuss surely intended when he signed this copy for a young mother in 1963, this book has been read, a lot, and then some more. If you seek a pristine, "trophy" copy, this book is not for you. Instead, it is imbued with provenance and story. This copy is an early printing (definitively 1963 or before since that was the year it was purchased and inscribed). Condition is very good minus in a very good minus dust jacket. The glossy paper-covered boards binding is bright, square, and tight with modest superficial scuffing, appreciable wear confined primarily to the joints, spine ends, and corners, occasionally slightly exposing the card beneath. The contents are bright, with only a few, trivial instances of spotting. Dr. Seuss's inscription, inked in blue on the lower left front free endpaper verso, is bright and clean. Affixed to the lower left rear pastedown is the printed and illustrated ticket of "John Cole's Book & Craft Shop" in La Jolla, California, where this book was purchased and inscribed. The dust jacket's rear face highlights the publisher's "Beginner Books" division founded in 1957 by Phyllis Cerf, Dr. Seuss, and his wife, Helen Palmer Geisel, on the stunning success of this book's predecessor, The Cat in the Hat (1957). This jacket is not only bright, but complete, with no loss or tears. There is shelf wear to extremities, a vertical spine crease, and mild overall soiling. The jacket is protected beneath a clear, removable, archival cover.ProvenanceThis book's life story is as compelling as the story within. In 1959, the family of the "Jill" to whom this book is inscribed moved from Los Angeles to Point Loma in San Diego a beautiful peninsula protecting San Diego's vaunted natural harbor. Point Loma is just a few miles south of La Jolla, the seaside promontory to which Dr. Seuss had moved in 1948, where he lived the rest of his life, and where he wrote the majority of his books. In July 1963, Jill had her first child a boy, Jeff. For Jill's birthday that November, her mom decided to give her a gift that she could share with her new baby. Jill's mom was friends with Barbara Cole, proprietor of John Cole's Books in La Jolla, and Barbara was friends with Dr. Seuss, who lived exactly one mile away from the shop. So, with Barbara's help, Jill's mom got Dr. Seuss to inscribe 22 brand new copies of his books of which this is one in the fall of 1963. Jill read and reread these books to Jeff and his little sister, Lauren, born in 1966, throughout their childhood. Jill and her husband raised Jeff and Lauren in Point Loma, in the same house where, eventually, they read and reread this and their other Dr. Seuss books to their granddaughters, just as they had once read them to their children. With both children and grandchildren grown, Jill decided to entrust her Dr. Seuss books to us. Hence we now offer this book from their collection to a new owner for the first time since it was purchased for Jill by her mom and inscribed by Dr. Seuss in 1963. Reference: Younger & Hirsch, First Editions of Dr. Seuss Books, 2002, with 2004 corrections, Entry 11, pp. 40-42.

If you seek a pristine, "trophy" copy, this book is not for you. Instead, it is imbued with provenance and story. This copy is an early printing (definitively 1963 or before since that was the year it was purchased and inscribed). The dust jacket and front cover differ in various respects from those of the first printing. Condition is very good minus in a very good minus dust jacket. The glossy paper-covered boards binding is bright, tight, and square, though with light overall scuffing, including shallow horizontal indentations to the front cover. Regarding the indentations, their pattern makes it seem as if the book was once briefly used as a hard surface beneath a piece of paper on which a child swiftly moved a pencil back and forth. Minor shelf wear to extremities occasionally exposes white paper beneath the glossy surface, particularly at the corners and spine ends. The contents are bright, with light spotting primarily confined to the page edges and first (though p.3) and final leaves. Dr. Seuss's inscription, inked in blue on the lower left front free endpaper verso, is bright and clean. Affixed to the lower left rear pastedown is the printed and illustrated ticket of "John Cole's Book & Craft Shop" in La Jolla, California, where this book was purchased and inscribed in the fall of 1963, the shop located one mile from the La Jolla home of Dr. Seuss. The dust jacket is bright and complete, the printed "195/195" at the upper right front flap intact. The rear face highlights the publisher's "Beginner Books" division founded in 1957 by Phyllis Cerf, Dr. Seuss, and his wife, Helen Palmer Geisel, on the stunning success of this book. There is a vertical spine crease, light wear to the hinges, joints, and spine, and minor soiling overall, noticeable only to the white rear face. The jacket is protected beneath a clear, removable, archival cover. The cat that made Dr. Seuss and changed books for childrenThe Cat in the Hat, published in 1957, was the result of a joint venture between Houghton Mifflin and Random House. While Geisel was under contract with Random House, Houghton Mifflin approached him to write a children's book using only vocabulary from a list of 225 words for early readers. Due to his contract, Random House retained the trade publication rights while Houghton Mifflin obtained the school rights.By all accounts, Geisel underestimated the challenge of working within the confines of the word list."Seuss was used to inventing words when he needed them, so to stick to a word list was a huge challenge for him," and it reportedly took him a year and a half to write the book.Intended by the publisher as a children's primer, the book vastly exceeded expectations, and its huge success made "Dr. Seuss" a household name. The Cat in the Hat also revolutionized the conventional approach to children's primers. The book was so successful that Random House created a special division, Beginner Books, with the Cat in the Hat as the logo and Dr. Seuss as president of the division.ProvenanceThis book's life story is as compelling as the story within. In 1959, the family of the "Jill" to whom this book is inscribed moved from Los Angeles to Point Loma in San Diego a beautiful pen.

Add to basketFirst edition, first issue, inscribed by the author in reminiscence of his travels in Japan in 1953: "With very best wishes, Dr. Seuss". The inscription was for the school librarian Georgia Sealoff, who has tipped in an original photograph showing Dr Seuss and his wife standing with Sealoff and other staff outside the Japan Libr…ary School at Keio University, Tokyo. Sealoff has annotated the names of everyone depicted in the photograph. Dr Seuss also wrote to her in a letter (not included here), "What a pleasure to have heard from you after all these years! May 14, 1953, was a day that is so happily fixed in my memory that I can almost jot down, even now, exactly what happened every minute. I have often wondered what happened to those early Keio Library graduates and I'm delighted to hear that the group contained so many successful individuals. That, of course, was inevitable, with you as their leader. I thank you for what you did for me that day in Tokyo. And I greatly appreciate your taking the time and trouble to write me on my birthday". Dr Seuss was in Japan researching the effects of the occupation upon schoolchildren on behalf of Life magazine. His findings were published as "Japan's Young Dreams" (Life, March 1954). The visit left a deep impression on Dr Seuss and he allegorized what he learned in Horton Hears a Who! (1954). Georgia L. Sealoff was a visiting professor in Japan from 1952 to 1954. Her teaching experience at the Japan Library School at Keio University was "an inspiration to the students who were to become school and children's librarians". While librarian of West Seattle High School in 1956, she received the Grolier Foundation Award, "presented to a librarian in a school who has made an unusual contribution to the stimulation and guidance of reading by children and young people". Sealoff has provided her ownership stamp and inscription on the front and rear endpapers. The first issue has unlaminated boards and the price code 200/200 on the jacket. Large octavo. Illustrated throughout by the author in red, blue, and black. Original blue boards, spine and front cover lettered and decorated in red, white, and black, pictorial endpapers. With dust jacket. Housed in custom blue quarter morocco folding box by the Chelsea Bindery. Light wear to ends and corners, splits to inner hinges, adhesive residue to front free endpaper verso, with associated light browning to title page; jacket bright, handful of small tears and creases, unclipped: a very good copy in near-fine jacket.

Binding with glazed pictorial paper cover over boards and title on spine, very light signs of wear at corners and spine… ends, binding stitched at 1 inch intervals; upper cover illustrated and lettered with addition of "For beginner readers"; back cover with excerpts from reviews printed in letterpress below illustration of chalkboard reading Educators hail The Cat in the Hat. Printed in red, black, salmon, dark blue and light blue on wove paper, with bold illustrations on every spread; pages a touch yellowed on edges. On the back of the last page of text is a note on the book enclosed within a large outline in blue of Cat in the Hat. The ORIGINAL DUST WRAPPER in near fine condition, with just slight wear on corners and a chip on the bottom of the spine, reproduces the book's cover; front flap bears price on upper right corner, 195/195, indicating this is the sencond state of the dust jacket. Accompanied by a small drawing of a "green egg" with "Dr. Seuss" autograph in black ink with on a light green index card, 3 x 5 in. (76 x 127 mm). [Younger & Hirsch 7; Greenaway 95]. Dr. Seuss was challenged by Houghton Mifflin's Education Division director, William Ellsworth Spaulding, to create a book for young children using the 225 essential words for beginning readers, a book they would not want to put down. Seuss used 223 of the words from the list, plus 13 others. Seuss tricked kids into enjoying learning with his destructive and charismatic house guest. Inspired in part by Krazy Kat and Felix the Cat, but with a wily mind all his own, the Cat in the Hat's humor and naughtiness are engaged in the noble cause of literacy. "Parents," notes biographer Brian Jay Jones, "were more than happy to join Dr. Seuss as fellow revolutionaries. Even if parents didn't necessarily understand the pedagogy, it was easy to see the difference between the staid DICK AND JANE and the rambunctious CAT IN THE HAT: kids wanted to read about the antics of the cat, just as Geisel had hoped." This is the third issue of the first edition, as evidenced by the 195/195 on the front flap of the dust jacket, the glazed paper cover, and no mention of the "Beginner Books" series on the rear panel. (Younger & Hirsh, p. 26-28). Seuss was born in Massachusetts and studied at Dartmouth College and Oxford. He designed corporate advertisement and published his first children's book "To think that I Saw It on Mulberry Street" in 1937, a book that Beatrix Potter called "the cleverest book I have met with for many years." During World War II Seuss served in the U.S. Army and drew political cartoons for magazines. He was a prolific author and among his 44 children's books many have received honors, including the Pulitzer, the Peabody, 3 academy Awards and 2 Emmys, but The Cat in the Hat was an immediate literary and educational success and defined his career. Published in 15 languages it has been the source for TV specials, a musical, several films and a variety of games and toys. First edition, First Printing, Third Issue. Dr. Seuss (illustrator).
