Rohm earned the Medal of Honor at Ream's Station in August 1864. He was later wounded at Farmville, during the Appomattox Campaign. There is a signed dedication on the title page dated 22 Aug 98. First edition: there was an enlarged edition in 1870, and then a 'nuova serie' in 1887-90. Fenzi (1822-1901) was a prominent supporter of Italian unity and a follower of Mazzini: he had lived for several years in exile in London, where he clearly learnt the language and an affection for Britain. The collection includes poems translated from the Italian, French and German, as well as ocdasional poems addressed to society acquaintances such as 'Lady L (who has journeyed up the Nile)', or 'To the Count and Countess M'. Two poems at the beginning address 'R.B.', which one might assume to be Robert Browning, but seem actually to be directed to one Dick Brydges. But presumably Fenzi must have known the Brownings, who were among the most prominent English-speaking residents in Florence in 1860. This copy is a presentation copy from the author, inscribed 'To Lord Lindsay, trusting to his kind indulgence'. This is the notable bibliophile James Ludovic Lindsay (1847-1913), the future Earl of Crawford, who was in due course to expand and improve his father's great library, the Bibliotheca Lindesiana. He was known as Lord Lindsay until he inherited his father's title in 1880.

Signed by Larson's daughter, Annie Larson Blum, who contributed the Foreword, and is responsible for the printing of her deceased father's memoirs. Blue cloth, gold stamping on front cover and spine, [18], 326 pp., frontis. [portrait], foreword, illustrated. Much on the Texas frontier, Indian fighting, J.E.B. Stuart and John Sedgewick, Bent's Fort, the Santa Fe Trail, the Civil War, San Antonio, Camp Verde, etc. Larson spent over 7 years in the army, serving for 4 years in the Union army and participating in much of the fighting during the Tennessee campaigns, and finally retiring in October, 1867. A well written and interesting first-hand account. A prime work on this cavalry and missed by almost all the standard bibliographies. "Larson joined the army in 1860, and served in the West until joining the Civil War. Fort Laramie, Riley, Fettermen, Bent's Fort, Santa Fe, etc."-Tim Phelps. Some light tanning to edges of text block and the outer edge of the first few pages, else a fine, bright, tight copy of this very scarce biography.

Early edition of one of the most famous epic poems in European literature, entirely printed in italic. The plates are by Iacomo and Francesco Valegio, some are signed in the plate. (Not in Graesse, who notes a 1611 edition with only 6 engravings). Ex-libris Nordkirchen (Duke of Arenberg).
