Ernest Caylus (1813-1878) was a young Frenchman forced to flee political unrest at home, coming to America in 1835. Most of the letters are to and from New York City. Most of the letters are in French w…ith some in English. Names and places mentioned are frequently identified in footnotes. This volume was printed in cooperation with the American Embassy at Madrid at the behest of his family. Many of the letters deal with political situations in France, and after the death of Therese Caylus (his daughter) his grand daughters wished to have them published for his posterity -- great grand children and their descendants. Some of the letters in English are in the period of the Franco-Prussian War. OCLC notes four titles concerning Caylus but not this title. Joints cracked but firm. Three quarter brown morocco and marbled boards and marbled endpapers.Very good.

Le Comte Anne Claude De Caylus (1692-1765) fut un des pères de la méthode comparative en archéologie, et un important collectionneur, notamment ami du peintre Watteau, dont on retrouvera la trace dans l'inspiration de Marillier, illustrateur des présentes oeuvres légères de Caylus. Les deux derniers volumes n'étaient pas prévus à l'origine de cette édition ; rajoutés, ils contiennent des pièces attribuées un temps à Caylus et regrettées par les souscripteurs, mais souvent rédigées par d'autres auteurs. Parmi ces ouvrages : Le Recueil de ces Dames (par Chevrier), L'Essai historique sur les Lanternes (par Dreux du Radier), Les Chats (par Moncrif) et l'Histoire des Rats (anonyme) ; les Mémoires de l'Académie de Troyes (par Grosley) et les Mémoires de l'Académie de ces Dames & de ces Messieurs. Two articles, mostly in French but with snippets in Greek, published seemingly in First Edition state, and in structurally sound, attractive condition, having been disbound from a larger volume… comprising contributions to the Memoires de Litteratures, a premiere social sciences and humanities journal founded in France by Armand-Gaston Camus in the 1790s. The first Memoire is pp. 315-394, still solidly together, string from binding slightly loose, with only mild sunning along edges of the rag paper, light foxing even lighter soiling thereto, else clean, unmarked. The 12-panel, laid in illustration at rear is titled "Plan et coupe du char funeraire qui transporta le corps d'Alexandre de Babylon en Egypte" (D'apres la description de Deorde de Sicile)." The Second Memoir is from pp. 395-456 and attached to which, tipped in, is another lovely rendering in black and white of an architectural drawing. Then laid in is a six-panel, three-fold, quite arrestingly beautiful illustration of an imagined funeral memorial or eventual mausoleum of Alexander the Great, being drawn on wheels to and throughout Egypt and Babylon by a legion of horses, titled "Restitutiton de la char funeraire qui transporta, de corps d'Alexander du Babylon en Egypte." Both texts ever so slightly wavy, but not from damp-staining, and the rag paper smells great. Else and withal, a lovely, scarce, intriguing set of articles about French appreciation for the classics and especially Alexander the Great.
