With an engraved title-page, and engraved portrait of the author, and 105 engraved anatomical illustrations, of which 2 are folding. Bound in modern calf. On the spine, 5 raised bands. Title gilt to the second panel, author gilt to the third, city and date gilt to the fifth. All edges of the text-block speckled blue. Plate 9 with a vertical tear extending from the top edge. Plate 10 at one point completely severed but since repaired. Loss to the bottom edge from leaves Yy to Aaa. Browning and repaired losses to the bottom edge of leaves Ddd to Qqq. Crude later hand coloring to plate 2. Graphite marginalia to plate 93. Collated complete against Choulant; "5 leaves of preliminaries." "Gulielmus Cowper, criminis literarii citatiis" read the splashy title of Govard Bidloo's (1649-1714) polemic pamphlet accusing English anatomist William Cowper (1666-1709) of blatant plagiarism in the year 1700. Bidloo's anatomia hvmani corporis had been released to the European market 15 years prior to tepid applause. Bidloo had garnered recognition as a professor at the Hague, at the University of Leiden, and as personal physician to William of Orange, but the expense of the work's production left little profit to enjoy. After a similarly fruitless Dutch language edition, Bidloo's publisher sold the plates for the behemoth medical text to Dr. Cowper, who went on to reissue them under his title, Anatomy of the humane bodies (Oxford, 1698). The plates -- executed from the lush and often tender illustrations of Gérard de Lairesse (1640-1711) -- were immediately recognizable. Cowper had gone as far as using Bidloo's engraved allegorical title-page, merely amended with a piece of lettered paper which neatly fit over the original title. In his (seemingly facetiously titled) rebuttal, ?????????? in qua dotes plurimae et singulares Godefridi Bidloo, perita anatomica, prohitas, etc., celebrantur et ejusdem citationi humillime respondetu, Cowper claimed that Bidloo was never the rightful owner of the plates, and that they had been commissioned for Dutch biologist, Joannis à Someren. The editors of Heirs of Hippocrates herald the debacle as "one of the most famous instances of plagiarism in the history of medicine." The scuffle between the anatomists was moot, as the scientific accuracy later proved to be lacking. The real triumph was in de Lairesse's artistry. In Amsterdam during the latter half of the XVIIc, the pious austerity of the Protestant Dutch in Rembrandt's age had given way to unbridled opulence, and de Lairesse's classical style took part in defining the Baroque age. It made him one of, if not the most popular painter in Amsterdam at the time. Garrison-Morton testifies that "the value of Bidloo's anatomia lies chiefly in the 105 fine copperplate engravings" and Choulant notes that "[the depictions] all have a great many accessory.the drawing of the nude figures is entirely in French taste and.the engraving is most elegantly done and is artistically perfect." The work has been celebrated for centuries as a continuation of Vesalius's Renaissance project but is surely unrivaled in its own age. Dr. Michael D. Paul was a nephrologist, an impassioned supporter of special collections, and a dedicated patron of dealers in fine printing and rare Judaica. Through his support, the Jewish Public Library launched the Dr. Michael D. Paul Rare Books Initiative, which worked to bring its 1,500 rare texts to the public through visits to secondary schools, community centers, libraries, and synagogues. In memoriam for Dr. Paul, JPL's director, Eddie Paul, aptly summarized the collector's life and work, writing, "Kidneys filter and clear toxins from the blood; books help to clarify and filter the detritus the world throws at the imagination." Choulant History and bibliography of anatomical illustration (1920) pp. 250; Cushing B76; Garrison-Morton 385; Heirs of Hippocrates 435; Russel British Anatomy 1525-1800 211-214; Wellcome II. pp. 165.

Bidloo had already published his Anatomia Humani Corporis in Amsterdam in 1685; the illustrations were based on drawings by Gerard de Lairesse (1640-1711). Sales, however, were apparently quite slow, and much to Bidloo's displeasure, Cowper (1666-1709) acquired 300 complete sets of the plates from the publisher. He published these, along with a new text, under a new title and under his own name. His own contribution to the pictorial program consisted only of nine additional plates on myology, which he had drawn by Henry Cook (1642-1700) and engraved by Michiel van der Gucht (1660-1725).,.References: Choulant 95 - Wellcome II, 401 - cf.
