Bindings are solid. This is a complete 10 volume set of 1876 encyclopedia, bound in leather. Dimensions of each volume: 10.25 X 7.25". Contains marbled edges and end pages. Blind stamped leather covers with gilt decoration on spine, colored endpapers. Covers have mild shelfwear, lightly rubbed corners/edges, slight soiling, slightly frayed spine ends. Volume I: 2 lightly bumped corners. Volume X: straight tear below top spine end. Volume III: small tear at top of front endpaper. Pages are clean and unmarked, slightly toned with light foxing on fore-edges.Numerous color maps, several pull-outs. Light foxing on most of the color maps, and the pages that surround them. Foxing does not affect legibility. Binding is tight. Hinges are cracked. Very heavy set, nearly 50 lbs. Very nice set.

Condition: Good. Most items will be dispatched the same or the next working day. A copy that has been read but remains in clean condition. All of the pages are intact and the cover is intact and the spine may show signs of wear. The book may have minor markings which are not specifically mentioned. A good condition complete set of ten volumes, with volume 1 starting as a late 1800s 'New Edition'. All are bound in a uniform quarter leather brown binding with marbled textblock edges, pastedowns and endpapers and all 10 books show similar amounts of wear. The spines and leather corners are consistently heavily rubbed and show some loss to the edges, particularly volume 9. The boards have lighter scuffing and chipping throughout. The bindings throughout are generally in stellar shape for the age of the set, with tidily aligned pages and only occasional cracking around the inner board hinges. Volumes 4 and 7 have slacker sections that make the boards feel a little loose. The textblocks have light toning and foxing and occasional signs of handling but are as well-kept as the page binding, with unfaded print and the vast majority of the contents being clean and unmarked. Volumes 5 and 7 have a handful of extra-toned pages from where newspaper article cuttings have sat. A set with very worn spines but the contents and cores of the book are excellent. A nice set as-is for reading and reference and a good candidate for refreshing or rebinding. More photographs and information available on request.
