A first printing of volume one of The Complete Checkered Demon comics by S. Clay Wilson, published by Last Gasp Comix in 1998. The last of the Zap artists to be anthologized, Wilson has always been the most extreme. His wild stories of pirates, bikers, and deviants, centering around the character of the Checkered Demon, have kept their humor and philosophical bent while keeping their author far from mainstream comics publishing. With an introduction by William S. Burroughs, and blurbs by Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael McClure, and Carlo McCormick, this volume collects appearances of S. Clay Wilson's "The Checkered Demon," a character that first appeared in his underground comic strip Zap!, within Grist magazine. This first volume traces the evolution of the character alongside Wilson's life. Published by Last Gasp, an important small press in the Bay Area that focused on comics as well as some intersections with the poetry community. 245 pages. Size: 6" x 9" (150mm x 230mm). ISBN: 0867193840. (1.8 TCCDV1).

Softcover. Condition: Very Good. Issues 1, 2, and 3, with the Portfolio. 1977-79. Portfolio 1970. Light nicks and creases to covers, two with little paper price stickers. Issue 2 cover very lightly creased vertically in the middle and upper right corner, and with a couple of shallow chips along bottom edge. Overall, nice clean copies. The Checkered Demon was a cornerstone of underground comix, and introduced S. Clay Wilson's most notorious character - a violent and obscene antihero rampaging through surreal, chaotic landscapes filled with pirates, bikers, and grotesques. Wilson's signature style is densely detailed, anarchic, and unfiltered and on full display here, making this title a must-have for fans of transgressive comix and countercultural art.
