no binding. Condition: very good. This chromolithograph, titled "Monument of Lord Bacon in St. Michael's Church, near St. Albans," is a detailed illustration from the publication Old England: A Pictorial Museum of Regal, Ecclesiastical, Municipal, Baronial, and Popular Antiquities (1845), edited by Charles Knight and published by James Sangster and Co. The image depicts the monument dedicated to Lord Bacon, situated within St. Michael's Church near St. Albans. The monument features a statue of Lord Bacon, dressed in period attire, seated within an arched alcove. The statue is positioned on a pedestal adorned with inscriptions, likely commemorating his life and contributions. The surrounding architecture is characterized by classical elements, including columns and balustrades, which frame the monument and add to its grandeur. The print is signed "Leighton, del." The condition of the print appears to be aged, with some visible wear and discoloration, particularly around the edges and visible watermark stains, which is typical for historical prints of this nature. The artist, possibly related to the Leighton family known for their contributions to British art, captures the solemnity and reverence of the monument, reflecting the historical significance and respect accorded to Lord Bacon. The print serves as a visual representation of the historical and architectural heritage of St. Michael's Church, highlighting its role as a site of commemoration for notable figures in British history. Chromolithography is a method for making multi-colour prints. This type of colour printing stemmed from the process of lithography, and includes all types of lithography that are printed in colour. When chromolithography is used to reproduce photographs, the term photochrome is frequently used. Lithographers sought to find a way to print on flat surfaces with the use of chemicals instead of raised relief or recessed intaglio techniques.A chromolithograph is also known as an oleograph. The process was started in the early 1800's.This beautiful print would look great matted and framed. Or an art supply store can provide you with a selection of frames for old art treasures. This is a GENUINE ANTIQUE PRINT. It is NOT a modern reproduction, ie. a laser scan, photocopy etc. It is the original from the antique publication. This print was published on the date mentioned, or circa of the date mentioned at the top of the page. The term "print" is referred to an image on a piece of paper. The print I have for sale, like many antique prints that you see online, originate from an antique book or atlas publication. The publication may not always be known. Further journeys followed, and from 1862-1864 the artist undertook a trip around the world, which took him from Italy via the Middle East and Egypt to India, China and Japan, then across the Pacific Ocean to California, Central America and finally England. Antique Chromolithograph of Flamingos ? Phoenicopterus roseus, c.1890 A magnificent late 19th-century chromolithograph depicting the Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) in different ages and plumages. The plate shows a very old male, a two-year-old male, and a one-year-old female, carefully rendered with their characteristic long necks, slender legs, and vivid pink plumage. In the background, a flock of flamingos wades through shallow waters at sunset, creating a dramatic and atmospheric scene. Please note that we sell the print only and not the matting board or frame. The artist has captured both the elegance and the striking coloration of this iconic waterbird, which inhabits lagoons, estuaries, and coastal wetlands across southern Europe, Africa, and Asia. The chromolithographic technique provides exceptional depth and vibrancy, with fine detail in the feathers and subtle transitions in the sky and water. This print was part of a celebrated ornithological series documenting European and exotic birds with scientific precision and decorative flair. The plate is signed with the initials "A.G." in the lower left corner, identifying the contributing artist. Please note that we sell the print only and not the matting board or frame. Condition report: Good condition with strong, well-preserved colors. Light age toning in margins and faint foxing spots to the left edge, consistent with age. Plate mark clearly visible. No tears or major blemishes. Not supplied with matting board or frame. Framing tips: A gilt or gold-accented frame with a light cream or ivory mat will enhance the warm tones of the plumage and sunset background. For a more modern presentation, a black or walnut frame with a soft off-white mat provides a clean and elegant contrast. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: A.G. (artist/engraver), c.1890, Europe.

Pheasant and Wild Turkey, Antique Chromolithograph Game Birds c.1900 This vibrant antique chromolithograph features two striking game birds: the pale variant of the Common Pheasant (*Phasianus colchicus var. subalbidus*) and the Wild Turkey (*Meleagris gallopavo*). Printed circa 1900, this plate combines two ornithological subjects in a single, elegantly composed print. These richly colored illustrations were likely produced for a German natural history publication or hunting reference atlas, which were popular at the time for their detailed visual documentation and scientific value. The upper image (Plate 19a) shows a male pale pheasant, referred to in German as "Weisslicher Fasan." Its white-blushed underparts, chestnut wings, and long striped tail are finely depicted against a backdrop of low shrubs and hilly terrain. The bird's iridescent green head and red wattle are captured with striking contrast and detail. Below, Plate 19b portrays a male Wild Turkey ("Wilder Truthahn") in profile, strolling through a wooded clearing. This bird is rendered with remarkable accuracy, showcasing its scaly plumage, fan-like tail, and distinctive head and wattle coloration. The Wild Turkey, native to North America, was a symbol of interest and novelty in European ornithological works of the time and was admired for its impressive size and behavior. These plates were produced using chromolithography, a printing technique that involved applying separate color layers using lithographic stones. The result is a richly saturated image with fine tonal gradations, as seen in the plumage, landscape details, and lifelike posture of both birds. Both illustrations are signed in the plate, likely by German wildlife illustrators active in the late 19th century. This print is ideal for collectors of hunting art, bird illustration, or decorative natural history prints. Condition and framing tips: In good condition with some light age foxing around the margins. Best framed with a double mat to separate the two images or in a single tall frame with a neutral mat. Warm wood or walnut frame complements the earthy tones of the birds.

Bitterns in Reeds ? Antique 19th Century Bird Chromolithograph of Little Bittern This exquisite 19th-century chromolithograph features three Little Bitterns (Ixobrychus minutus), shown in a lush wetland setting among tall reeds beside calm water. The male, female, and a juvenile are depicted in lifelike detail and natural postures?climbing, perching, and stalking through the dense vegetation?evoking the quiet stealth of this elusive species. The male at the top is easily identified by his contrasting black back and crown, cream underparts, and slender yellow bill. The female, shown to the left, is more warmly brown with streaked markings, adapted for better camouflage. The juvenile, lower right, displays the beginning of those adult traits while still showing immature plumage and proportions. Native to wetlands across Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, the Little Bittern is one of the smallest heron species, known for its shy nature and its ability to disappear into reeds with remarkable ease. This print captures both the bird's anatomy and habitat with great care, showcasing not just ornithological accuracy but also a strong compositional elegance. Produced using chromolithography, a highly refined color printing method of the 19th century, the image offers exceptional tonal depth and color layering. Each plate required several stones?each with a different ink?to achieve this level of complexity and beauty. The print is signed with the initials of the artist, A.G., likely referring to Anton Goering or another accomplished illustrator from the German ornithological tradition inspired by Johann Friedrich Naumann. Such works were part of scientific publications intended for collectors, educators, and nature enthusiasts and remain prized for their historical, artistic, and decorative value. Condition: Good condition with clean image area and vivid original coloring. Slight scattered foxing visible in the outer margins, but paper remains stable with no tears or folds. Framing tips: Frame with a light olive, cream, or soft grey mat to echo the natural greens of the reeds. Use a natural wood or dark gold frame for a classic look. UV-resistant glass is recommended to preserve color integrity.

Partridges in Rural Landscape ? Antique 19th Century Bird Chromolithograph This charming 19th-century chromolithograph features a male and a juvenile Grey Partridge (Perdix perdix), or Rebhuhn, set against a gently sloping countryside with a village in the distance. The birds are shown in a naturalistic pose?alert and grounded among tufts of wild grass. The male is easily distinguished by his grey breast, russet flank markings, and the distinctive dark horseshoe-shaped belly patch, while the younger bird is illustrated in more muted tones, showing its developing plumage. The Grey Partridge is native to temperate regions of Europe and is often found in open farmland and grasslands. Known for its strong site fidelity and family groupings, this species was once a common sight across rural landscapes and remains an enduring symbol of the European countryside. The print demonstrates the refined detail and lifelike color possible with chromolithography, a technique developed in the 19th century that used multiple stones to layer colors and create highly accurate and attractive prints. The soft transitions in the sky, the texture of the grass, and the careful rendering of the birds' feathers show the care and precision that went into its production. Signed with the initials A.G., this plate is attributed to Anton Goering or a similar German illustrator active in natural history publishing during the late 1800s. It forms part of a larger ornithological series that sought to combine scientific documentation with decorative appeal, inspired by the tradition established by Johann Friedrich Naumann and other early pioneers of European bird study. This print makes a perfect addition to collections focused on game birds, antique zoological works, or pastoral European scenes. Condition: Very good condition with strong original color and crisp details. Minor foxing visible in the margins, but the image itself remains clean and unmarred. Paper is stable and well-preserved. Framing tips: Frame with a natural wood or walnut frame and use a warm cream or pale green mat to enhance the earthy tones. Ideal for country-style interiors or nature-themed displays. UV-protective glass is recommended.
