Contact seller5-star sellerFirst Edition. First edition. Published anonymously in 20 monthly parts issued from January 1844 to July 1845. Bound from the original monthly parts with title page dated 1845 added. Cover of Part IV, June 1844, bound in at front; illustrated with frontispiece and 39 engraved plates by Robert Cruikshank. Chamerovzow (1816-1875) was both an author and anti-slavery campaigner. This, his first volume of historical romance, purports to share the secrets imparted to the author by an old Parisian just before he died. The story was later continued in THE EMBASSY, OR, THE KEY TO A MYSTERY (1845) and concluded with PHILIP OF LUTETIA, OR, THE REVOLUTION OF 1789 (1848). [Oxford DNB]. Newer gilt-stamped brown pebbled imitation leather spine; original polished calf boards ruled and with corner ornaments in gilt; elaborate gilt-stamped inner dentilles; coated marbled endpapers which appear to have been added with rebacking; top edge gilt. Plates show scattered foxing otherwise very good to near fine. Also includes "The Iron Mask, an Episode.".…

Add to basketThree-quarter Leather. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Stout 8vo. Pp. xii, 640. Illustrated with 39 plates by Robert Cruikshank. Later three-quarter green morocco over marbled boards. Gilt lettering stamped on spine, gilt ruled and ornaments in compartments, with five raised bands. Marbled edges. Inscribed twice by the author at pages 225 and 257. This account of the Bastille is charmingly illustrated by (Isaac) Robert Cruikshank (1789-1856), brother of George, and represents one of his last works. The tale, which was widely believed to have been "merely" translated from the French, is in fact an independent text by Chamerovzow, who published several works in English. Although subtitled "First Series," no further volumes were issued. A handsome, well-bound copy. Not in SADLEIR, or in WOLFF, who cites the sequels The Embassy (1846) and Philip of Lutetia (1848). Robert Cruikshank (illustrator). Signed.…
