/// Standort Wimregal PKis-Box113-U027 Sprache: Spanisch Gewicht in Gramm: 10.

Reprint. Condition: Gut. pp. 45-51. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author. - A very good and clean copy. - From the text: In the United States of America we recently commemorated the 350th anniversary of the birth of the study of Latin and Greek in North America. Despite the distance from the great centers of classical learning in Europe, and the complete absence of relics of the Roman (not to mention the Greek) presence in our landscape, the classical curriculum was imported and speedily naturalized with the founding of the Boston Latin School in 1635 an Harvard College in Cambridge in 1636. The memory of Queen Elizabeth, Shakespeare, King James I and the King James Bible were still fresh to the American pioneers, and they carried with them in their intellectual baggage across the Atlantic Ocean the models of the European educational system. This curriculum had at its core in the colonial grammar schools and colleges the study of the Latin and Greek languages, literatures and antiquities. In this country, from its beginnings until the early 19th Century, besides the Sacred Bible, stood what some called the Sacred Classics. - Wikipedia: Meyer Reinhold (September 1, 1909 July 2002) was an American classical scholar and also a specialist in Jewish studies. He might have added that the orator was also out to make Clodia appear as worthless and frivolous as possible, for the speech is a kind of voyage of discovery in which Cicero presents these two characters to the jury as he wants them to be viewed: Caelius is very good and Clodia very bad. To develop this idea, the orator draws his strategy from the fact that Clodia is the hidden force behind the prosecution. - Wikidata: Canadian-American classical philologist (1929-2014). Haase. - A little curled, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: In 1594, the Elizabethan tourist Fynes Moryson traveled to southern Italy as part of his Continental tour. While visiting the Naples area, Moryson was most anxious to visit the volcanic land known as the Phlegraean Fields or Terra Laboris, which was much renowned for its salubrious mineral waters and for sites associated with Virgil, Cicero, and other notable figures from Greco-Roman antiquity. Often thwarted in his efforts to identify the sites, Moryson at last exclaimed in despair, The bath commonly called of Cicero, which the Physitians call the bath of Trituli . . . lieght neere the ruins of the Village of Cicero, called his Academy. . I know not whether this village (or rather Palace) had the name of Academy or not for I find in my notes a village of Cicero on the way from Naples to Pozzuoli and likewise the mention of this bath, and his Academy, neere the Lake of Avernus. . . . Offprint, stapled. Condition: Gut. pp. 14-25. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author to W. Haase. - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise clean. - From the text: Cicero wrote his eulogy of Cato Uticensis within three months of the latters death in April, 46 B. C. and probably published it in November of that year. There is general agreement among scholars that this was more than simply a panegyric. It was an important political statement, containing a defense of the Republican form of government at a time when Caesar, the strong man, had all but established himself and was threatening a change from traditional aristocratic democracy to empire directed by one man. The popularity and importance of the topic and the document are shown by the fact that Brutus, M. Fadius Gallus, and Munatius Plancus also wrote eulogies of Cato and that first Hirtius and then Caesar composed rebuttals of what Cicero had said. In view of the importance of the Cato, it is unfortunate that so little of it has been preserved. Only two fairly colorless fragments survive. In spite of this, scholars have busied themselves with identifying the form of the document and reconstructing its subject matter. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Reprint, stapled. Condition: Gut. pp. 105-120. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Signed by the author. - Author's name underlined on first page, otherwise a very good and clean copy. - From the text: The problems connected with the sixteen books of Ciceros Epistulae ad Atticum are difficult and manifold, as all those familial with them know only too well, and a great deal of literature has accumulated in the last 100 years in an attempt to illuminate some of the most intricate questions facing the students of Latin literature. One of the most intensely debated issues about this collection of letters is no doubt the one concerning the date of its publication; it was started almost a century ago by Buecheler and continues to this day. This paper is intended to provide a fresh focus on the matter through a new discussion of the evidence and a reconsideration of certain points which, although not new in the proper meaning of the word, do not seem to have received the attention they deserved from the Cicero specialists.
