I shall argue that they were less because both the content of some of Claudius historical work and his early life, in which he made efforts to enter politics, and in which for a short period he may have seemed a possible candidate for advancement to imperial power, show him by no means uninterested in contemporary events; more, because in those historical works he had leisure to develop his own theory of what the Principate should be.
