Écrit à la fois en latin et en français il s'agit d'un ouvrage de droit public écrit entre 1376 et 1378 sans doute par Évrart de Trémaugon (conseiller du roi puis évêque de Dol-de-Bretagne) un juriste formé aux deux droits. ( wikipedia) - Cette oeuvre est un véritable traité politique, pionnier dans l'élaboration de la science politique. Elle porte sur la fiscalité royale, les relations entre souveraineté et droit et tend à définir précisément le pouvoir législatif. L'auteur s'inspire d'un Somnium de 1372 composé par le juriste bolonais Jean de Legnano. The engravings originally appeared as simple scenes, but are here presented within elaborate borders, made to look like picture frames. Dedicated to Madame de Maintenon, the wife of Louis XIV, the very attractive ornamental title-page bears her arms flanked by the figures of Religion and Charity, above the dedicatory inscription. The first plate begins the story of the Passion with Christ and his Apostles arriving in the Garden of Gethsemane and so forth to the Crucifixion, with particularly striking plates showing the Agony in the Garden juxtaposed with the sleeping Apostles, the proceedings before Pilate including the Flagellation, the physical details of the erection of the Cross with Christ on it and the Resurrection. Designed to be used as devotional material, particularly during the Lenten season, this is a lovely copy, with wide margins, bound in contemporary red panelled morocco and with strong, crisp impressions of the plates. Among Le Clerc?s many works - he was a prolific artist and engraver as well as a teacher of perspective at the Académie des Beaux-Arts, this achieved a wide public, perhaps because of its devotional usage, and saw a number of editions. ?Few artists have produced as much work as Le Clerc. he treated every genre with indisputable mastery (Benezit). Les productions de P.A.B. seront d'abord réalisées sur une petite presse installée dans son appartement à Alès.
