Martin introduces the disciplines, techniques, tools, and practices of true software craftsmanship. This book is packed with practical adviceabout everything from estimating and coding to refactoring and testing. It covers much more than technique: It is about attitude. Readers will learn What it means to behave as a true software craftsman How to deal with conflict, tight schedules, and unreasonable managers How to get into the flow of coding, and get past writer's block How to handle unrelenting pressure and avoid burnout How to combine enduring attitudes with new development paradigms How to manage your time, and avoid blind alleys, marshes, bogs, and swamps How to foster environments where programmers and teams can thrive When to say "No"and how to say it When to say "Yes"and what yes really means Great software is something to marvel at: powerful, elegant, functional, a pleasure to work with as both a developer and as a user. An incomplete version was printed for private distribution in 1794. The book offered here is the first published edition. Garrison-Morton 1764 (citing the 1803 edition): "The British and American medical professions have adopted much of 'Percival' in their ethical codes." "When the American Medical Association adopted its first code of ethics in 1847, many of its precepts were drawn from this book. Even today, after undergoing several revisions, the American Medical Association guidelines of ethical conduct for the physician are still based on those formulated by Percival. . . . The first half of the volume is devoted to the ethical principles which physicians and surgeons should exercise in their dealings with hospitals, with one another, with apothecaries, and in those cases where familiarity with the law is required. The second half of the book consists of an appendix containing a sermon on hospital duties addressed to the Liverpool Infirmary in 1791 by Percival's eldest son as well as a series of notes by Thomas Percival that enlarge upon the textual footnotes" (Heirs of Hippocrates 1037). FIRST EDITION. Contemporary tree calf, boards worn and rubbed; interior leaves toned but overall a good copy with the ownership signature of Dan Wilson. First edition. "When the American Medical Association adopted its firs code of ethics in 1847, many of its precepts were drawn from this book. Even today, after undergoing several revisions, the American Medical Association guidelines of ethical conduct for the physician are still based on those formulated by Percival" (Heirs). Percival (1740-1804), an English physician, can best be described as a health reformer. He was asked by his colleagues to devise a set of laws for governing the Manchester Infirmary where he worked as a staff physician, expanding it to this code of ethics. Percival treats the ethical principles physicians and surgeons should exercise at hospitals, with patients, and with pharmacists. Garrison-Morton 1764; Heirs of Hippocrates 1037; Osler 3645.
