Add to basketHardback. Condition: Very Good Indeed. Multiple portraits 000 (illustrator). This uncommon Ayot St. Lawrence limited edition of the Collected Works of George Bernard Shaw complete in thirty volumes, illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the author to the front of each work in the set. Limited edition, being number 1614 of 1790 sets as stated on the limitation page preceding the frontispiece of Volume I.With several monochrome plate illustrations across the 30 volumes, including a frontispiece portrait of George Bernard Shaw for each volume.Uncommonly encountered as a complete set thus.A small village in Hertfordshire, Ayot St. Lawrence is now best known as having been the home of George Bernard Shaw from 1906 up until his death in 1950, with the author's ashes being scattered there. This thirty-volume set is the Ayot St. Lawrence limited edition of the Collected Works of George Bernard Shaw, an Irish playwright, critic, and political activist who received the 1925 Nobel Prize for Literature. Shaw was the most prominent pamphleteer of the gradualist Fabian Society, a British Socialist organisation which promoted gradual reform over revolutionary overthrow attempts. Despite these earlier views, he later also regularly and publicly expressed a number of contentious views, promoting eugenics, opposing vaccination, and eventually, declaring admiration for both Mussolini and Stalin's dictatorships. He is, as such, a truly complex and challenging author. Shaw worked within a range of literary genres, from contemporary satire to historical allegory, and authored in excess of sixty plays, including major works such as Pygmalion (1913), Saint Joan (1923), and Man or Superman (1902), all included within this set. In the original publisher's quarter cloth binding with the original paper wraps and paper spine labels. Externally, generally very smart with some age toning or discolouration of, and light rubbing to, the wraps. In some instances, rubbing has resulted in very fractional loss of the wraps. Slight bumping to the heads and tails of the spines and the extremities, in the latter's case resulting in fractional loss of the paper wraps. A few minor handling marks or marginal stains across the set, including to the spine labels, some of which are slightly nicked. Tidemarks to the spine label of Volume IX. Dust has collected along the joints and around the fore edge for multiple volumes. One very light tidemark to the join between front pastedown and front free endpaper of Volume VIII. Internally, generally firmly bound with pages that are a trifle age toned however for the most part very bright and clean. Some minor closed tears and chips across the set, not impacting text. A touch of offsetting to some of the tissue guards. Several leaves remain uncut. Very Good Indeed. book.
