Condition: Sehr gut. Einband berieben. Ecken bestossen, sonst gutes Exemplar. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 550 IV, 200 S. plus Tafeln. Mit zahlr. Abb., broschiert.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The Horrid Popish Plots Sammelband of four SCARCE to RARE pamphlets on the fabricated conspiracy, invented by Titus Oates and spread by Protestant activists, that the Pope and Catholics aimed to assassinate the Protestant King Charles II, burn London and Great Britain to the ground, "enslave" the English people to the falsehoods of Catholicism and to cause harm to the people of England and Scotland. IMPORTANCE & HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Published between 1679-1681 at the height of anti-Catholic fervor in England. One compelling point of propaganda used to fan the flames was blaming the infamous and tragic London Fire of 1666 on papist arsonists. ***Several of these works have only come to auction a handful of times in the past 50-100 years. Quite rare collection indeed as most of these pamphlets were discarded after circulation. OVERALL CONDITION: VERY GOOD & Textually complete. First work lacking frontispiece else complete. ABOUT THE COLLECTION OF PAMPHLETS The four rare pamphlets are bound together in a fine full leather modern binding: double filet gilt paneling: four gilt-bordered raised spine bands and a gilt-lettered red morocco spine label: thick, high-quality endpapers. Slim, small folio: 12" x 8". WORK 1: 1679, A Narrative and Impartial Discovery of the Horrid Popish Plot: Burning and Destroying London and Westminster by Captain William Bedloe. Published in London by Robert Boulter, John Hancock, Ralph Smith, and Benjamin Harris. Collated: [12], 27, [1] pp. Lacking frontispiece, textually complete. WORK 2: 1679, A Narrative of the wicked Plots carried on by the Seignior Gondamore for advancing the Popish Religion and Spanish faction. Heartily recommended to all Protestants by Rich. Dugdale, gent. Published in London by T.B. and sold at the Peacock at St. Paul's Cathedral. Collated and complete: [2], 16 pp. WORK 3: 1680, The Papists Bloody Oath of Secrecy, and Letany of Intercession for the carrying on of this present plot. With the manner of taking the Oath, upon their entring into any Grand Conspiracy against the Protestants. As it was taken in the chappel belonging to Barmbow-Hall, the residence of Sir Thomas Gascoigne, from William Rushton, a Popish Priest, by me Robert Bolron.Published in London by Randal Taylor. Collated and complete: 23, [1] pp. NOTE: Among other insidious plots, the author (Robert Barton) states that the Pope and his conspirators were plotting to assassinate every Protestant Head of State by stabbing or poison. WORK 4: 1681, A Collection of the substance of several Speeches and Debates made in the honourable House of Commons, relating to the Horrid Popish Plot, upon occasion of the bill for disabling James Duke of York from inheriting the imperial crown of this realm. Published in London by Francis Smith. Collated and complete: 20 pp. ABOUT THE HORRID POPISH PLOTS The Horrid Popish Plot was a fabricated conspiracy claimed by the English priest Titus Oates in 1678 to have been orchestrated by Roman Catholics to assassinate King Charles II and restore Catholicism in England (and other Protestant ruling countries). Despite being a fiction, it triggered widespread anti-Catholic hysteria, leading to the execution of more than twenty innocent Catholics between 1678 and 1681 and a real political crisis in England. CONDITION REPORT VERY GOOD+ Exterior and binding: FINE. Square spine, firm hinges and joints, tight pages. Some minor rubbing. Interior: VERY GOOD. Some light marking and wear on the endpapers. Most of the pages are clean and bright and vary between bright white to lightly toned with one or two darker toned pages. Signs of handling - page waviness, the odd scattered mark or smudge or small ink spill. Only a little scattered foxing and the odd rust spot. Some pagination has been corrected by hand in pencil. A number of the leaves have been closely cropped, affecting some page numbering. Rear pastedown with signed binder sticker indicating a 1997 rebind date and that PVA glue and flour paste were used.

The Hempfield Railroad is a type of railroad that is emblematic of mid-XIXc American railroading: the bridge line. Bridge lines were constructed across the country to connect two rival railroads (in this case, the massive Pennsylvania RR and smaller western lines in Ohio), which might refuse to connect their own lines with each other. Many of these lines were miniscule and are now long-abandoned, but the Hempfield Railroad's story is different. Unlike many other small railroads, which had issues recruiting talent in engineering, the Hempfield's chief engineer was Charles Ellet Jr. (1810-1862), a prolific civil engineer who later led the first federal survey of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. One of the marvels he constructed was the still-standing Wheeling Suspension Bridge in West Virginia, the western terminus of the Hempfield Railroad. While they were the first to open across the northern WV panhandle, they were not the only line: by 1871, they were a part of the much larger Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, and most of the line is now abandoned in favor of faster (and hillier) routes via Pittsburgh. The first pamphlet describes the railroad's route and why it should be built, the second is a transcript of the legal document allowing for construction of the line, and the third records a hearing with the finance committee of the Philadelphia City Council with the president of the line. The map (spanning Ontario in the north, Nashville in the south and the Mississippi River in the west) which is sometimes circulated with the first pamphlet, shows the Hempfield's relatively small footprint, but promises that "within the next three years, all those important lines of communication will be open for trade and travel," a promise that was largely fulfilled.Catalogued by Jonah Kramer.

24 printed pamphlets, half disbound and loosely inserted in recent calf covers, the other half bound to match; together with manuscript copies of articles, tipped-in autographed letters, news clippings, and several other pieces of printed ephemera. Highlights include: A clutch of manuscript notes (approximately 8pp) of manuscript notes, tipped-in letters, and newspaper cuttings relating to the firearm (a bell-nosed blunderbuss) used in the notorious double murder at Stanfield Hall, Norwich, in 1848. The victims, Isaac Jermy and his son Isaac Jermy Jermy, were shot and killed on the porch and in the hallway of their stately home. The perpetrator James Blomfield Rush, their delinquent tenant farmer who had conducted a complex and devious scheme to defraud them of their property and their lives, was hanged at Norwich Castle on 21st April 1849. The sole edition of British Army officer Frederick Marow Eardley-Wilmot's (1812-1877) Preliminary education for the profession of arms (London, 1856); a pamphlet proposing reforms to the teaching and examination of students in artillery and engineering disciplines. An apparently unrecorded, impassioned, address The present proof company the bane of the gun trade (Birmingham, 1845) by William Greener (1806-1869) 'to the master, and journeymen gun makers' calling for the abolition of the Proof Company 'the sole cause of the falling off in the Birmingham Gun Trade' that is 'now only a money-getting institution'. Remarks on the newly invented elliptical gun-barrels, and their advantages over the cylindrical ones in general use (Manchester, 1826), an apparently unrecorded pamphlet by John Beever of Higher Ardwick describing the 'superiority' of his patented design of shotgun. Remarks on Captain Marshall's Gun Carriages, with the whole of the official reports to the French and English governments (London, 1831), a scarce explanation (more promotional than instructional) of an improved artillery mount to be fitted on naval vessels. COPAC records copies at two locations (BL and National Museums Scotland), OCLC adds one further (NMM). Further details for this item are available upon request. Size: 8vo.

Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. A terrific collection of 19 items, made up of primarily of the small blue pamphlets with stiff paper wraps that Newton sent out as Christmas presents to friends, family and a limited number of subscribers. Also included are three hand-written letters, to the owner of the collection, Horace B. Hare, a close personal friend of Newton's, and Pennsylvania neighbor. Hare's wife, Mary Ellen, nee Cassatt, was a niece of painter Mary Cassatt. The pamphlet collection has several items signed and inscribed by Newton. Also included is the important First Edition of Three Songs for St. Cecilia's Day by W.H. Auden The collection comes in a custom made folding box that Newton himself had made for Hare at a binder in London, which is the subject of one of the letters and mentioned in another. The box is 3/4 navy morocco over blue cloth covered boards. Titles in gilt. Marbled liner. In generally nice condition, however the front hinge is split fully along its length. Still, it is holding firm by the liner beneath. All pieces are square, tight and clean throughout with little or no wear. One or two have a slight dog-eared corner but very trivial defects. Items include: * A Leech Drawing. 1923 Signed and inscribed presentation copy. "Mr. & Mrs. Horace Hare, How time flies, printed eleven years ago for my friends. A. Edward Newton". * My Library. 1926 Signed & inscribed, simply to/from. * A Reprimand and What Became Of It. 1927 * Nelson. 1928. * The Christmas Spirit. 1930 * Thomas Hardy Mermorial. 1931. Signed and inscribed, simply to/from, With laid-in printed folded sheet: "Tabloid" describing this as the 24th Newton ephemera. Also laid in are two Jimmy Hatlo cartoon bookplates. * Ascot. 1933. Signed, simply to/from with Newton's initials. * Trollop Society. 1934. * Trollop Society. 1934. Another copy. * Staffordshire. 1935. * Pope, Poetry and Portrait. 1936. With addendum tipped in at page 8-9. Plus: * A Tribute to A. Edward Newton. MacLeish, Archibald, et. al. 1940. "Issued from the Rare Book Room of the Library of Congress in an edition of one thousand copies December, 1940". * Auden, W. H. , Three Songs for St. Celia's Day. 1941. First Edition Limited Edition of 250 copies. Fore-edges slightly creased. * Richardson, Frederick. Letter from England to A. Edward Newton. 1940 With original mailing envelope. Laid in is a printed card: "The family of A. Edward Newton wish to take this way of acknowledging your expression of sympathy. (Upon Newton's death). * Richardson, Frederick. Letter from England to A. Edward Newton. 1940. Another Copy lacking acknowledgment card. Plus three hand-written signed letters, two with original envelopes. Two are from December, 1934 and discuss the gift from Newton to Hare of the custom made box to hold these pamphlets, his "Newtonia". The third letter is dated December 1939 and is an acknowledgment of a gift Newton received from Hare and the hope that they may get together soon. Clearly this was a close association. To conclude this remarkable gathering is a two-page, 8.5" x 11" proof, on onion skin, dated June, 1940, of a letter from Newton to be published as a Broadside, with a third page written and signed by Newton describing the project and its limitation to 200 copies. The letter, "Gives Newton's views on aiding England in the war and reprints an article he mailed to several newspapers titled, 'Give Without Counting'". Newton died just two months later. (Fleck, Oak Knoll Books, Cat. #86, Item 189, A.46) A simply gorgeous and quite unique collection. Signed by Author(s).

Condition: Very good. Various sizes (8vo., 4to. and folio). Some apart some inherent browning on account of the wartime paper supply. All original wrappers present when so issued (some chips to wrappers - see below). Preserved in a red cloth folding case (commissioned by Martin Breslauer?). IMPORTANT COLLECTION OF 23 WORKS, EXTRACTS, OFFPRINTS AND PAMPHLETS WRITTEN BY ERNST KYRISS (1881-1974), THE FOREMOST HISTORIAN OF GOTHIC BOOKBINDINGS, FROM THE COLLECTION OF B.H. BRESLAUER, HIMSELF A GREAT BINDINGS HISTORIAN AND AN EVEN GREATER COLLECTOR. Our collection includes THE FIRST publication by Kryss on the history of bookbinding (1929/30) as well as an INSCRIBED copy of his doctoral thesis (incredibly this title is not listed in Worldcat). Many of these early offprints and pamphlets simply do not appear on the market; if found, they are almost always in substandard condition, unlike the works in our collection which in general are preserved in excellent state. Originally trained as an engineer, Kyriss "retired for health reasons" in 1924 (we were informed by B.H. Breslauer that Kyriss married a wealthy woman and quit his job). From 1924-1928 Kyriss studied art history in Munich where he first encountered incunabula. He soon realized that the history of German Gothic bookbindings had not been methodically studied. His first publication on bindings was published in 1929/1930; this was followed by no less than 180 articles, pamphlets and monographs, including his magnum opus, the 4-volume "Verzierte gotische Einbande im alten deutschen Sprachgebiet" (1951-1958). In this extraordinary work, Kyriss differentiated "only" 186 workshops, of which he had recorded 7,088 different tools, but for publishing reasons, however, he only depicted "only" 1,711 individual stamps and rolls, most of which were South German. Indeed, Kyriss obsessively studied gothic bindings for more than four decades, during which time he visited more than 90 libraries and archives in more than 50 cities (including Crakow, Olomuch and Prague). In his long career he examined and approximately 50,000 Gothic and Renaissance bindings; incredibly he made detailed notes and rubbings on most of them. Only a fraction of his work has been published: today the Kyriss Papers (which we have seen) are preserved in the Württembergische Landesbibliothek Stuttgart and contain more 20,000 leaves of rubbings. While his interest in the history of bookbindings was wide ranging, he focused largely on gothic bindings of Southern Germany. To a very large extent, the Sammlung Kyriss forms the main component of the epic online Einbanddatenbank (EBDB) project, along with the Sammlung Wolfenbuttel, BSB Munich, SB Berlin (including the Sammlung Paul Schwenke). CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION: 1. Nurnberger Klostereinbande der Jahre 1433 bis 1525. Inaugural-Dissertation. 1940. KYRISS'S DOCTORAL THESIS - NO COPY IN WORLDCAT - INSCRIBED BY KYRISS IN 1950. 2. Gill, William Daniel (191692), geologist, was born 29 June 1916 at Hillam, Yorks., second child among three sons and three daughters of Richard Wells Gill, farmer, and Eva Gill (née Hesselgrave). He was educated at Castleford Grammar School and Leeds University, where he had a successful undergraduate career and received a degree in geology (1938). Robert George Spencer Hudson was his professor, and the two men remained close friends for the next thirty years. On leaving Leeds he joined the Attock Oil Company (1938) as a field geologist and palaeontologist. During the second world war he worked as a development geologist and petroleum engineer in India (including the Punjab, later part of Pakistan) and Burma, and became a leading expert on Himalayan geology. In 1948 he left the oil industry for academia and a lectureship in geology at Nottingham University. Two years later he was awarded a D.Sc. (1950) by Leeds University for his publications on Himalayan geology, and in 1953 he was appointed professor of geology and mineralogy at TCD, the first non-Irish holder of the position since 1883. Under his direction and with the aid of funds from the earl of Iveagh (qv) and oil industry contacts, the geology department experienced a period of expansion. A vibrant postgraduate school of research was initiated, which led eventually to an increase in staff numbers. The museum building, which housed the department, was internally reconstructed to include new research and teaching facilities. Unfortunately many of the original museum's historic rock collections were discarded in the move. In Ireland his research interests focused on the Upper Carboniferous rocks of Co. Clare, and particularly on the deformation features of soft sedimentary structures so clearly exposed there. He published a significant paper on sand volcanoes with P. H. Keunen (1958) and brought his Clare work together in a later publication of the Geological Survey of Ireland (1979). He was in his element in the field, where his enthusiasm for his subject was said to be more eloquent than in the lecture theatre. As oil and mineral exploration was initiated in Ireland in the 1950s, he took on the role of consultant, and, with his students, was involved in regional geological mapping. He expanded his consultancy role to oil companies in Libya and Greece and in 1961 resigned from Trinity to accept the chair of oil technology at the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College, London, later becoming professor of petroleum geology (1976). Hudson, his original professor, replaced him at TCD (19616) in the chair of geology. In London Gill introduced the M.Sc. course in petroleum geology and established the first UK-based organic geochemistry laboratory for the study of petroleum-source rocks (1969). He continued to consult with oil companies and governments in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Australia, and Canada. His extraordinary memory and ability to assimilate and synthesise information and data led to successful oil finds in newly explored areas. As a geologist he was most interested in the concepts of large-scale tectonic processes in such places as the Alps, the Himalayas, and the east African rift. However, his impatience with detail meant his publication record never quite kept pace with his achievements. During his career he was elected FTCD (1958), fellow of the Geological Society of London and of the Institute of Petroleum (London), MRIA (1955), and member of the RDS (vice-president 1959, 1961). A self-confident and flamboyant man with a large physical presence, he is said to have had grandiose plans which did not always come to pass. Known as 'Dan', he was popular with both students and staff and was viewed as warm-hearted and straightforward. University politics, however, were not his strong point. On the death of Hudson (1966), Gill professed an interest in returning to Trinity, provided he did not have to submit a formal application form. However, TCD did not respond. He married (1946) in India Margaret 'Betty' Torrance, whom he had met in the Yorkshire dales when he was mapping as a student; they had two daughters. Their houses (16 Garville Avenue, Rathgar, Dublin, and 85 Platt's Lane, Hampstead, London) were the frequent hub of late-night parties, where Dan would sing and play the piano. An active sportsman, he loved cricket and was president of the Trinity boat and rugby clubs. In 1978 he retired to Glusburn Green, Glusburn, Yorks., but continued consultancy work in the Middle East for some time afterwards. His wife died in 1987; five years later, he died (29 October 1992) in Yorkshire. [This Biography was authored by Patricia M. Purple mourning lines frame the edges of the 4 pages of card stock which is bound at the top with red cotton ribbon. The tradition behind the burial of the algebra was sort of a light hazing ritual performed by freshmen students. Thirty days after arriving at Bard, the freshmen were to steal an algebra book which they were to then sign and bury with several bottles of wine. Then, the night before commencement the students now seniors, would dig it up and consume the wine, raising a toast to their graduating class. The ritual is described as follows in a 1930 issue of the Lyre Tree, a student newspaper: "There is a tradition of long standing at St. Stephen's that within 30 days after the close of the first semester the Freshman class shall, with all the ritual and solemnity due to the occasion, secretly inter an algebra, autographed b.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good overall. A sammelband of pamphlets on gynecological & obstetric subjects dating from 1856 to 1886. The compiler was Dr. Robert Barnes (1817-1907) who was a well known obstetric physician. During his career he lectured on midwifery at three of the great London medical schools, London Hospital, St. Thomas' Hospital and St. George's Hospital. There is a presentation inscription on the pamphlet by Lazarewitch ("To Doctor Robert Barnes.") and a presentation tag at the foot of p. 295 of the Johnstone article, 'The Menstrual Organ', extracted from the journal of the British Gynoecological Society ("From Spottiswoode & co., New-Street Square, London, E.C. For Dr. F. Barnes"). "A leading teacher and gynaecologist in London, Barnes was a rival of James Matthews Duncan both in debates at the Obstetrical Society and in practice. One of the first to work at the minute pathology of obstetrics, he influenced the progress of obstetric medicine. His name has been attached to an obstetric instrument and a curve of the pelvis." "Barnes took a prominent part of the founding of the Obstetrical Society of London in 1858 and was president in 1865-6. But a dispute with the council of this society led him in 1884 to establish the British Gynaecological Society, of which he was honorary president until his death. The Justification of the schism was the antagonism of the old society to the performance of ovariotomy and other important operations by obstetricians. Barnes was one of the pioneers of operative gynaecology, and the cause he advocated gained the day." (D.N.B.) Articles include: THOMAS (T.
