Il conte Francesco Algarotti (Venezia, 11 dicembre 1712 Pisa, 3 maggio 1764) è stato uno scrittore, saggista e collezionista d'arte italiano, polimata, filosofo, poeta. Spirito illuminista, anglofilo, erudito dotato di conoscenze che spaziavano dal newtonianismo all'architettura, alla musica, era amico delle personalità più grandi dell'epoca: Voltaire, Jean-Baptiste Boyer d'Argens, Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis, Julien Offray de La Mettrie. Tra i suoi corrispondenti vi erano Lord Chesterfield, Thomas Gray, George Lyttelton, Thomas Hollis, Metastasio, Benedetto XIV, Heinrich von Brühl, Federico II di Prussia. Nella critica letteraria la polemica antiaccademica, antipedantesca, il gusto di una prosa sciolta da impacci e funzionale alle idee, la divulgazione alquanto mondana della nuova scienza fanno del veneziano Francesco Algarotti (1712-64) un rappresentante della nuova cultura. Dai maestri bolognesi Manfredi e Francesco Maria Zanotti derivò l'amore per la scienza astronomica, dai viaggi compiuti in Francia, Germania, Inghilterra, Russia e dai grandi personaggi conosciuti (Voltaire, Federico II di Prussia, Alessandro III di Sassonia) apprese le idee nuove e soprattutto l'arte di mediarle e di comunicarle in forme letterarie adeguate come il «saggio» breve ed elegante, il verso sciolto. Con questo verso seppe scrivere sopra il commercio ma soprattutto nelle prose del Newtonianismo per le dame (1737), espose in modo gradevole e brillante le teorie ottiche di Newton affinché il pubblico delle donne sapienti potesse intenderle. Libera letteratura in libere istituzioni fu il suo ideale di cosmopolita amante dello spirito italiano, di scrittore alleggeritosi dalla pesantezza del classicismo tradizionale con la frequentazione di intellettuali «filosofi» e raffinati. L'ispirazione galante è nel romanzo erotico Il congresso di Citera (1745) che ricorda il celebre Tempio di Cnido di Montesquieu mentre nei Viaggi di Russia è spregiudicato osservatore di politica e di cultura. Scrisse anche di pittura, architettura, musica, commercio disinvoltamente e con eleganza cercando sempre di far conoscere idee e non parole; né gli mancò la consapevolezza di essere iniziatore di un nuovo genere di letteratura. Il tempio di Cnido è un poema di sette canti in prosa di Montesquieu, pubblicato senza il nome dell'autore nel 1725. «Lo scopo del poema è dimostrare che a renderci felici sono i sentimenti del cuore e non i piaceri dei sensi.» La trama simboleggia l'amore bucolico opposto a quello cittadino. Aristea ed Antiloco, insieme alle proprie amate, dopo aver lasciato il tempio di Venere a Cnido, in Asia Minore, essere passati attraverso la grotta della Gelosia ed essersi calmati presso l'altare di Bacco, raggiungono epiloghi diversi. Nella prima coppia, l'inclinazione naturale prevale, le vicende della seconda coppia si concludono invece con il trionfo della virtù e la sconfitta della passione. Boily, featuring a flying Cupid with arrow, three putti with hunting horns & dogs against a wooded background, engraved title, floral borders. Page height: 4 11/16"; text features various small printer's ornaments, borders, & is in a very small, but clear type. Near miniature, pocket-size edition of this classic. Bound in full, dark green, straight-grain morocco, with 5 gilt lines & title on spine & single line borders around margins of covers, broken line border on cover edges, leaf-design border dentelles; all edges gilt; with headbands, pink silk book-marker bound in at begininng of Algarotti work; marbled paper endpapers; fore-edge painting/decoration features a grotesque, Renaissance-style mask, surrounded by similar, colored floral type arabesques. Colors are still quite sharp, when this piece is correctly (but carefully) fanned open. Binding is unsigned but looks continental, rather than English, ca. 1800. Spine ends & cover corners/edges show slight rubbing or wear, with some of the green leather surface worn off & a few small similar rubs to the spine, outer hinges, small dark spot to fore-edge; a few tan spots to frotispiece margins, text. A very unusual type of earlier fore-edge painting, here with the understated neo-classical binding, given a more gothic/grotesque look, which an earlier owner has described by penciling on first flyleaf: "Allegorical fore-edge painting".
