Paperback. Mr. Livingston's signed copy of a pamphlet pertaining to Florida as a suitable "health resort" for Northern patients, by Frederick Lente MD. Dr. Lente (1823 - 1883) was the primary surgeon at the West Point Foundry, Cold Spring NY, during the Civil War. He served at the Foundry from 1851 to 1870; later he was head of gynecology and children's health at the University of the City of New York, and founder of the American Academy of medicine. Livingston was a member of a family of the Hudson River Valley, which at one point owned some 900,000 acres of land and about three dozen mansions in the area, giving the area the nickname "Livingston Valley". 8vo, 56pp, errata slip bound in. Printed paper wrappers. Wrappers chipped at edges and marked. Good + condition, but fragile. OCLC: 1648852.

First edition, first issue of the December 1959 issue of The Journal of Symbolic Logic. Octavo, original wrappers as issued, Volume 24 Number 4. Signed by Saul Kripke on page 323 next to the title of his abstract paper, "Distinguished Constituents." This issue includes three important abstracts of Kripke papers received by the Journal in 1959: "Distinguished Constituents", "Semantical Analysis of Modal Logic", and "The Problem of Entailment." All three papers relate to Kripke's seminal first paper on modal logic "A Completeness Theorem in Modal Logic", a paper in which Kripke's initial intuitive idea was that a proposition is necessary if and only if it is true in all possible worlds. In near fine condition. Scarce, especially signed. American philosopher and logician Saul Kripke has made some of the most important and original contributions to the field of formal mathematical logic, particularly modal logic which extends classical logic to include modalities. Kripke wrote his first completeness theorem, A Completeness Theorem in Modal Logic at the age of 17, before graduating high school, and had it published a year later.

Add to basketHailing from Gateshead, County Durham, Elliot was a self-made man: he began life as a colliery labourer and ended it as one of the richest men in England, his wealth at death being given as £575,000. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. His residence in Whitby containing an Egyptian mummy was visited by Bram Stoker and appears to have inspired his 'Tale of the Seven Stars' (1903). 3pp, two of them 12mo and one 8vo. Bifolium, with one page of text written across the central opening at right angles. In good condition, lightly aged and worn, with a little glue from mount along outer gutter. Folded twice for postage. The recipient is not named. The letter is addressed to 'My dear Madam' ('I believe the above is the way you like or prefer to be addressed') and signed 'George Elliot'. A characteristic letter, with various content. The handwriting is difficult. The recipient is in 'the bright B[oeair?] Square', which he can 'realise as an ideal of rest change & pleasure'. He 'would give a great deal to be able to share the fine climate - but alas I am fixed to duties here and elsewhere in fact my advancing years are not so released from work & anxious care as they ought to be'. He bewails his '[savage?] habits of material work', and does not know where he will spend his Christmas ('I hope not in London'). He is 'pleased our friends of G[?] Square have got so nice a Chateau'. The second half of the letter contains references to: 'the sacred spot on the Hill where we spend some sober & happy useful time', and to the 'eventful' nature of 1888. In the last paragraph he states his intention of going to Newport for a few days in the following week, to 'bear with a Welsh deputation [?] asking to have the Local Go[vernmen]t Bill printed in Welsh to please & edify our Welsh Constituents'.

First Edition. Pamphlet removed 8vo, 32 pp. Early signature on title page, partially disbound, last eight pages are completely separated from the rest of pamphlet. Some heavy foxing to a few pages, and there are some chips and tears at the extremities, not affecting text. These pamphlet reviews the causes of the War of 1812, but carries a strong anti-war message that is signed with the names of 34 congressmen (names are printed on pages 27&28). The pamphlet accuses the Madison Administration of trying to incite people to war on the issue of 'impressments'. They maintain that the French are as guilty as the English on the subject of impressments. The last four pages of the pamphlet present statistics on exports to England and France.
