Roebling's Sons Company was responsible for the design, materials and construction of many of the most important suspension bridges in America beginning with the aqueduct across Pittsburgh's Allegheny River in 1844, the Niagra Falls Bridge in 1854, the Brooklyn Bridge opened to traffic in 1883, and the Manhattan Bridge in 1909. The photographic plates in this book record each step of construction , from the tower foundations to the completed bridge, of the Bear Mountain-Hudson River Bridge, opened in November 1924. All cable wire used in fabricating the two main cables, and the steel wire ropes used for foot bridges and suspenders, were furnished by the John A. Bound in dark green stiff printed wraps with gilt lettering and bridge illustration stamped on front cover. Binding cracked at title page; old tape repairs to head and tail of spine. Laid in is a TLS dated April 16, 1962 from a John Roebling's Sons Advertising Manager to A. C. Statter, concerning this volume. Name and monogram of Arthur C. Statter stamped on half-title. In addition, an old full-page clipping of a magazine cartoon of a collapsed suspension bridge is laid in. A handsome publication concerning the era's effort to traverse water and canyons with anchored supporting strands of cables. Some emphasis is placed on the Williamsburg Bridge. Now housed in a removable, clear archival sleeve with an acid-free backing.

Photo plate 13/14 has a piece aprox 1/2" x 2 " missing from the bottom, otherwise interior clean. Many photographs taken during the construction of the Bear Mountain Hudson River Bridge. Roebling was the premier construction wire producer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; most famously, they were the engineers of the Brooklyn Bridge and were still leaders in the field when they provided the cable for the George Washington Bridge in 1931-32.
