Hardcover. black-and-white photographs (illustrator). 1st edition. pp. xvi, 268. 8vo. Bound in original navy blue cloth and in original dust jacket. The inside of the front and rear panels of the dust jacket have a blue stain which has offset to the outer edge of the boards (although this is not particularly noticeable as the cloth is dark blue), causing the rear flap to adhere to the cloth. Front board a bit bowed. Binding tight, contents unmarked. Still a good copy. The dust jacket is rubbed at the extremities and would be considered in 'good' condition were it not for the staining to the inside. This copy inscribed in ink by the author to Wynne and Gordon McLintock, The author has signed, and dated, the inscription in the year of publication. Vice Admiral Gordon McLintock was the Superintendant of the United States Merchant Marine Academy (also known as King's Point) from 1948 to 1970. Carse also served in the American Merchant Marine, and was the author of five novels and ten works of non-fiction. Altogether, a unique presentation copy.

Trade paperback. Glued binding. xvi, 288, [4] p. Illustrations. Index. PQ 17 was the code name for an Allied convoy in the Arctic Ocean. In July 1942, Convoy PQ 17 lost 24 of its 35 merchant ships during a series of heavy enemy daylight attacks which lasted a week. The German success was possible through German signals intelligence (SIGINT) and cryptological analysis. The convoy was located by German forces on 1 July, after which it was shadowed continuously and attacked. The convoy's progress was being observed by the British Admiralty. The convoy was the first joint Anglo-American naval operation under British command in the war. The individual merchant ships were left without their escorting destroyers. The merchant ships were repeatedly attacked by Luftwaffe and U-boats. Of the initial 35 ships, only 11 reached their destination, delivering 70, 000 short tons of cargo. The disastrous outcome of the convoy demonstrated the difficulty of passing adequate supplies through the Arctic, especially during the period of perpetual daylight. Very good. Signed by author. Signed on t-p. Cover has slight wear and soiling. First U.S. Edition [stated]. Presumed First printing.
