Unbound. Condition: Good. Pictorial broadside announcement. Single sheet of medium stock off-white paper with die-cut rounded corners, measuring 4" x 7" printed on recto and verso. Illustrated with a halftone photographic portrait of Congressman Oscar De Priest. Verso prints the invitation to the Mass Meeting of Republicans. Moderate wear with creasing and light soiling, margins have creasing causing some breaks in stiff paper at corner margins, a good plus or better copy, with a small chip in blank margin of one corner. Signed: "Oscar De Priest" boldly in ink beneath his halftone photograph. Unrecorded by *OCLC*. A scarce political artifact of the first African-American elected to the United States Congress in the 20th Century. Born in Florence, Alabama, his parents were formerly enslaved. His family moved to Dayton, Ohio in 1878, and in 1889 he moved to Chicago, where he became a successful contractor and real estate broker. He later served on the Chicago City Council, becoming the first Black alderman in Chicago (1915-1917). In 1928 he became the first African-American elected to Congress in the 20th Century, and during his tenure was the only Black representative in Congress.
