An extremely rare first edition with just one copy registered on Worldcat and COPAC [British Library]. 8vo. Bound in the publisher's pale boards with the spine skilfully repaired with a new spine with paper label. Period ownership note in ink to the head of title of Ann Burchell. [5], 2-236pp. Text block starting to split but holding, scattered foxing. Overall about VG. Scarce. Esther Hewlett was a prolific author of children's books, tracts and books on domestic economy. It is of interest to note that Cottage Comforts, first published here in 1825, reached its eighth edition by 1831 and its twenty-fourth edition in 1864. It is a household management manual addressed to the labouring classes embracing the spirit of both Mrs. Beeton and Dr. Spock. Cottage Comforts was one of the author's earliest works and included chapters on renting and furnishing a cottage, brewing and baking, keeping animals, care and education of children, and the treatment of illnesses. Although it opened with a sententious section on the virtues essential to domestic comfort, Cottage Comforts was full of practical advice (the author had tried out her own recipes) and was forthright on such subjects as childbirth and constipation. A rare first edition. Further photographs available upon request.
