Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. 24 by 17.5cm., 416pp. The Creswell photographic archive at the American University in Cairo is an invaluable resource of over 12,000 printed images of Islamic architecture, mainly in Cairo, but also including buildings in other important cities such as Córdoba and Baghdad. Creswell s own photographs constitute the majority of the collection, but he also assembled work by photographers active in the decades before he began his systematic recording in the 1920s. This volume of collected studies seeks to highlight the value of this collection for scholars, who can examine the visual evidence of architecture now destroyed or altered in order to better understand various aspects of these significant buildings. Contributors discuss such issues as epigraphy in domestic and religious architecture, the use of early photographs as guides for modern restoration, and military architecture. Contributors: Tarek Galal Abdel-Hamid, Noha Abou-Khatwa, Conchita Añorve-Tschirgi, Dina Ishak Bakhoum, Nairy Hampikian, May al-Ibrashy, Hani Hamza, Chahinda Karim, Dina Montasser, Bernard O'Kane, Seif El-Rashidi, Ola Seif, Nicholas Warner. In publisher's shrink-wrap.

Etat : bon etat, couverture légèrement tachée, coins légèrement émoussés, pages de garde avec faibles rousseurs. Dans l'ensemble très bon exemplaire. Creswell, Bibliography of the architecture, arts and crafts of Islam to 1st Jan. 1960 (and) Second supplement Jan. 1972 to Dec. 1980. (with omissions from previous years). Par J. D. Pearson. 2 vols. Edition originale. Caire 1961 - 1984.

Elizabeth Fry (1780-1845) was a Quaker, reformer and philanthropist. She was a pioneer in the reformation of English prisons. Following meetings with prison authorities and prisoners, Fry and her assistants created a system of classification of the prisoners, prison dress, constant supervision by a matron and monitors, religious and elementary education, and paid employment. As a result of her efforts, prisoner conduct improved considerably. FryÕs work culminated in the founding of the Ladies Association for the Reformation of the Female Prisoners in Newgate in 1817; it became the British Ladies Society for Promoting the Reformation of Female Prisoners in 1821. It is likely the first nationwide womenÕs organization in Britain. Memoir of the Life of Elizabeth Fry is a publication of her papers, chosen with the approval of various family members. The extracts from her journal and other writings highlight the religious nature of her mind and the development of her Christian character Two volumes, octavo. . 16 (ads), xxii, 521; viii, 540 pp. Engraved frontisportrait of Fry by J.J. Hinchcliff from a portrait by Mrs. Charles Pearson in Vol I.; engraved frontispiece in Vol. II and three text illustrations. PublisherÕs purple cloth stamped decoratively and ruled in blind with a gilt-lettered spine Binding extremities lightly rubbed with slight fading, toning, and soiling to cloth. Intermittent very light foxing. The occasional small chip or tear. Pencil signature on front flyleaf of both volumes. A very good, tight set. Second edition, revised and enlarged. The first edition was published in 1847.
