Kautz" has been penned in 19th century ink (not in Kautz's hand). This image is not a carte-de-visite, but some other type of period portrait reproduced for we-know-not what purpose. Kautz (1828-95) was a German-American career officer who served in the U.S. Cavalry with distinction during the Civil War and rose to the rank of brevet major general, also authoring several military duties and customs manuals such as this. A superb and delightful extra-illustrated copy.
