Engstrà m took these photographs in several European and American cities, though predominantly in his native Sweden and New York, where he moved in 1998. Autobiographical in tone, he interweaves nude portraits of people we assume are his friends or lovers, self-portraits, landscapes and interior views, many of which feature unmade beds. Gerry Badger places Engstrà m 'in the vanguard of a new genre that depicts a veiled, oblique, almost novelistic view of modern life, especially modern relationships, apparently offering frankness and disclosure yet remaining extremely guarded.'
