Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. [10], 516, [2] Pages Illustrations. Source Notes. Selected Bibliography. Index. Minor DJ wear and soiling. Inscribed by the author on the title page. Inscription reads For Xavier, My you enjoy the dance of Sammy Fondly Wil Haygood March 2005. Wil Haygood (born September 19, 1954, in Columbus, Ohio) is an American journalist and author who is known for his 2008 article "A Butler Well Served by this Election" in The Washington Post about Eugene Allen, which served as the basis for the 2013 movie The Butler. Since then, Haygood has written a book about Allen, The Butler: A Witness to History. While being interviewed on the radio program Conversations with Allan Wolper on WBGO 88.3FM, Haygood revealed that he had tracked down another White House butler. At the last minute, this butler, who had served three presidents, refused to be interviewed; the man's family apparently did not want his story out against the parallel story of the election of President Barack Obama. Haygood is a fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and a professor at Miami University. Haygood's 2018 book Tigerland: 1968-1969: A City Divided, A Nation Torn Apart, And A Magical Season Of Healing was the runner-up for the 2019 Dayton Literary Peace Prize for Nonfiction. In 2022, Haygood was chosen as the recipient of the Dayton Literary Peace Prize's Ambassador Richard C. Holbrooke Distinguished Achievement Award. He was, for decades, one of the most recognizable figures in the cultural landscape, his image epitomizing a golden age of American show business. His career spanned a lifetime, but for years he has remained hidden behind the persona he so vigorously generated, and so fiercely protected. Now, in this surprising, illuminating, and compulsively readable biography, we are taken beyond the icon, into the extraordinary, singular life of Sammy Davis, Jr. In scrupulous detail and with stunning powers of evocation, Wil Haygood takes us back to the era of vaudeville, where it all began for four-year-old Sammy who ran out onstage one night and stole the show. From then on it was a motherless childhood on the road, singing and dancing his way across a segregated America with his father and the formidable showman Will Mastin, struggling together to survive the Depression and the demise of vaudeville itself. With an ambition honed by poverty and an obsessive need for applause, Sammy drove his way into the nightclub circuit of the 1940s and 1950s, when, his father and Mastin aging and out of style, he slowly began to make a name for himself, hustling his way to top billing and eventually to recording contracts. From there, he was to stake his claim on Broadway, in Hollywood, and, of course, in Las Vegas. Haygood brings Sammy's showbiz life into full relief against the backdrop of an America in the throes of racial change. Sammy grew up trapped between the worlds of blacks and whites, with so much invested in both. He made his living entertaining white people but was often denied service in the very venues he played. Drafted into a newly integrated U.S. Army in the 1940s, he saw up close the fierce tensions that seethed below the surface. Dragged into the civil rights movement, he witnessed a hatred that often erupted into violence. In his broad and varied friendships and alliances (with Frank Sinatra; Martin Luther King, Jr.; Richard Nixon; Sidney Poitier; Marilyn Monroe, to name just a few), not to mention his romances (his relationship with Kim Novak and his marriage to the blond beauty May Britt drew death threats), he forged uncharted paths across racial lines. Admired and reviled by both blacks and whites, he was tormented all his life by raging insecurities, and never quite came to terms with his own skin. Ultimately, his only true sense of his identity was as a performer. Based on painstaking research and more than 250 interviews, Wil Haygood brings us a sweeping and vivid cultural history of the twentieth century, chronicling black entertainment from its beginnings and the birth of popular culture as we know it. In Black and White transcends simple biography to become an important record, both celebratory and elegiacal, of a vanished America and its greatest entertainer. First Edition [stated], presumed first printing.

Titled and signed on the verso in black ink by the photographer.L'Est Républicain - Nov. 04, 2012: [Article on Alain Cinquini].It all started when he came across Yves Montand, Paul Newman and their respective wives. "I went to ask them to take a picture. Newman didn't want to. Simone Signoret told me that it was good to have asked? Montand understood that I would be there, at the exit of the restaurant, and practically organized a session by showing the mountain to Paul Newman. ». Alain Cinquini takes his first photo of stars; that he does not exhibit for several days. It was on the advice of a friend that he finally made contact with the Gamma agency. The beginning of a great career. In a quarter of a century, Alain Cinquini will take between 80,000 and 100,000 shots of the greatest stars, becoming one of the essential independent photographers in the south of France and Monaco. He will maintain privileged relations with stars cinema and artists like Armand or César, among others. In short, an exemplary career during which he will never steal an image and will never violate the privacy of his "clients". Quite the opposite of the paparazzi as we understand it today: "I have a way of working, with respect for people, probably because I was brought up that way. Some of my colleagues sometimes wondered how I managed to get certain photos. It was simply because I was seen well, that I was doing my job correctly. And with correction? Having a good reputation, in this environment, it counts, it opens doors.L'Est Républicain - 04 nov. Measures 5.75" x 8.25". Signed and inscribed by author on front free endpaper: "For George, Whose heart is as big as all Russia, Phil." Yordan originally wrote this play about a Polish American family, but it was adapted by the American Negro Theater and performed by an all African American cast starting in Harlem in 1944. It moved to the Mansfield Theatre on Broadway in 1944 and starred Hilda Simms, Canada Lee and Alice Childress. For the time, the production was critically acclaimed for presenting a story that does not condescend African-Americans and performances from an all African-American cast. The Baltimore review called it: "the first play of colored life to recognize the fact that colored person are individuals with the same problems, ways of living, speech, and point of views as the whites." Two films were made from the play, including one in 1958 starring Eartha Kitt and Sammy Davis, Jr. Book also includes several black and white photos of the original Harlem production. Unbound. Condition: Very Good. Green sheet of paper. Approximately 5.75" x 4.5". Age-toning at the edges, very good. Boldly Signed by Sammy Davis, Jr. on one side, and Inscribed by Sal Mineo on the other. The autograph seeker has noted the date of each autograph - on successive days in 1961. Though never on-screen together, the two stars actually have an interesting connection: Davis sang the title track for the 1955 film *Six Bridges to Cross*, which featured Mineo's debut performance, and it was reportedly while en route to the recording studio to perform the song that Davis was in the auto accident in which he lost an eye, entirely changing his life and career. One might argue which is the more desirable autograph: Davis the bigger star, Mineo's autograph the scarcer. You decide.
