hardcover. Condition: Very Good in Dustjacket. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. New York. 2000. September 2000. Free Press. 1st American Edition. Very Good in Dustjacket. 068484320x. 284 pages. hardcover. Jacket design by Bradford Foltz. keywords: History America Politics Ronald Reagan Right Wing California. DESCRIPTION - Ronald Reagan's first great victory, in the 1966 California governor's race, is one of the pivotal stories of American political history, a victory that seemed to come from nowhere and has long since confounded his critics. Just four years earlier Governor Edmund 'Pat' Brown was celebrated as the 'Giant Killer' for his 1962 victory over Richard Nixon, and his liberal agenda reigned supreme. Yet in 1966 political neophyte Reagan trounced Brown by almost a million votes, marking not only the coming-of-age of Reagan's new conservatism but also the first serious blow to modern liberalism. Drawing on scores of oral history interviews, thousands of archival documents, and personal interviews with participants, Dallek offers a new portrait of the 1960s that is far more complicated than our collective memory of that decade. inventory #28231.

Illustrations : 126 photographies en héliogravure. Reliure : reliure carton, couverture illustrée par Henri Matisse. Volumes : 1 volume. Format : in-folio. Pages : 158 pp. Editeur : Paris, Verve. Date : 1952. Références : Parr/Badger I, 208/209; Auer 343. Cartier-Bresson, Images à la Sauvette. Introduction et 126 photographies de Henri Cartier-Bresson. Paris, Verve 1952. Edition originale.

FIRST EDITION. With 126 photographic illustrations. Publisher's decorated cloth designed by Cartier-Bresson, and in the original dust jacket. Laid in is the separate leaflet (4to., 12 pp.) containing the captions to the photographs in English. A fine copy. First edition of this landmark work in the history of photography. This is the American issue, though printed in France in collaboration with Éditions Verve. Though many people assume that his "decisive moment" is an ephemeral and spontaneous image representing a snap in time, Cartier-Bresson felt quite differently; his moment is all about composition and how a photograph can communicate to the observer: "If a photograph is to communicate its subject in all its intensity, the relationship of form must be rigorously established. Photography implies the recognition of a rhythm in the world of real things. What the eye does is to find and focus on the particular subject within the mass of reality In a photograph, composition is the result of a simultaneous coalition, the organic coordination of elements seen by the eye. One does not add composition as though it were an afterthought superimposed on the basic subject material, since it is impossible to separate content from form. Composition must have its own inevitability about it. But inside movement there is one moment at which the elements in motion are in balance. Photography must seize upon this moment and hold immobile the equilibrium of it." Parr/Badger I, pp. 208-209; Roth, pp. 134-135; Open Book, pp. 154-155.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. First edition, Simon and Schuster, New York, 1952. Complete with rare dust jacket and captions booklet as pictured. Inscribed and signed "Pour Mary- Henri". I have been unable to definitively say who "Mary" is. The book is in very good condition. There is an approximately three quarter inch loss to the top of the spine of the book. The binding remains solid. There is the very slightest of toning to the page edges only. The text bock and photographs are absolutely clean and unmarked. This book was obviously very carefully read. Includes The Decisive Moment captions booklet as pictured. The boards are clean with a very, very slight bowing to the front edge as pictured. Moderate toning to the spine. The dust jacket is Good+, intact, with some staining throughout the top quarter of the front and staining along the edge of the front near the spine. Moderate sunning again to the spine and missing a ¾ inch portion at the top. I have several additional photographs available upon request. Signed by Author(s).

First edition, American issue, printed in France. Accompanied by the separate [12] pp. quarto leaflet printing the captions to the photographs in English. pp. 29, and 126 photographic illustrations (some double-page) on rectos and versos of 62 plates. 1 vols. Folio. One of the defining books in the field of photography from the immediate post WWII years, In his important introduction to this collection, Cartier-Bresson sums up the principles that would inspire the work of countless photographers for the next half-century or more: "There is nothing in this world that does not have a decisive moment. To me, photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as of a precise organization of forms which give that event its proper expression." The design was undertaken by Teriade, with the collaboration of Marguerite Lang, and the photographs engraved and printed in heliogravure by Draeger Frères. This state of the dust jacket prints comments on the rear inner flap by Monroe Wheeler, Philippe Halsman, Jacob Deschin, et al. The initial edition consisted of approximately 3000 French language copies and 7000 English language copies, and like any number of significant books, received highly positive reviews but sold only a slow trickle of copies. Because of the nature of the binding and dust jacket, copies in agreeable condition, as here, are few and far between. Open Book 154-155; Parr / Badger, vol. 1, 208-209; Roth 134-135 Decorated paper covered boards after design by Henri Matisse. An unusually nice copy, near fine, in slightly tanned dust jacket (replicating Matisse's design) with a few smudges at the extreme lower edges, a short closed tear at the top edge of the front panels, and a few short tears and a small creased snag at the edges of the rear panel pp. 29, and 126 photographic illustrations (some double-page) on rectos and versos of 62 plates. 1 vols. Folio First edition, American issue, printed in France. Accompanied by the separate [12] pp. quarto leaflet printing the captions to the photographs in English.

FIRST EDITION. THE DECISIVE MOMENT, Simon & Schuster / Editions Verve, 1952, first edition, bottom 1/2 inch of spine chipped, 1/4 inch closed tear to the bottom of the front board, light wear and tear to the head of the spine, text block a bit loose, 2 small faint tape stains to each of the paste-downs, else a bright vg copy with the original caption booklet laid in as issued in a good to very good Matisse dust-wrapper repeating the design of the covers with some chipping to the head and heel of the dust-wrapper spine, less to the margins and other light wear and tear and soiling. Most certainly a cornerstone book in the building of a 20th century photography library.
