First edition, first impression, the dedication copy, inscribed by the author on the dedication leaf. The printed dedication reads, "To my friend Arthur Waugh" and the inscription continues "with affectionate regards, W. W. Jacobs. 29 Aug 1919". With Arthur Waugh's bookplate to the front pastedown. Waugh was a prominent author and literary critic, and the father of Evelyn Waugh. His elder son Alec married Jacobs' daughter Barbara in the same year that this copy was presented. This copy has also been specially bound for presentation by Bain of London, using the same front cover design as the normal trade issue, but with a gilt morocco title label to spine. Octavo. Frontispiece, vignette title page, and three plates. Original grey cloth signed by binder Bain of London, titles to spine gilt on black ground, titles and pictorial decoration to front board in blue and black. Very lightly rubbed, spotting to edges of contents. An excellent copy.
