First edition of the fourth novel in Ian Flemingâs James Bond series. Octavo, original black cloth. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Lionel from Ian with affection." The recipient is most likely British Conservative politician and newspaper proprietor Lionel Berry, 2nd Viscount Kemsley, was professionally and socially connected to Ian Fleming through their shared involvement in the British press in the immediate postwar period. They likely met at Kemsley Newspapers, the media group owned by Berryâs father, William Berry, 1st Viscount Kemsley, which was a major force in mid-twentieth-century British journalism. Flemingâs appointment as Foreign Manager in 1945, drawing on his wartime naval intelligence experience, placed him in senior managerial circles where he would have worked with Berry. Their professional association subsequently developed into a personal friendship. Very good in a very good dust jacket. Light toning to the first and last few leaves and text block edges. Three small, neat repairs to the verso of the jacket. Jacket design by Pat Marriott. DiamondsÂAreÂForever was the first of the Bond novels to feature a pictorial dust jacket, and the first to be illustrated by Pat Marriott. The three previous jackets, all executed by Ken Lewis, featured simple typographic and patterned designs. Housed in a custom full morocco clamshell box. The fourth novel in the James Bond series, Diamonds Are Forever was first published by Jonathan Cape in March 1956 with an initial print run of 12,500 copies which sold out quickly. The novel centers on Bondâs investigation of an international diamond-smuggling operation linking Britain, Africa, and the United States, situating its narrative within postwar concerns about transnational crime, commerce, and mobility. Fleming adopts a restrained, procedural approach that emphasizes institutional detail and logistical realism, a method frequently noted by contemporary reviewers as central to the seriesâ credibility. It was the basis for the 1971 film bearing the same name directed by Guy Hamilton starring Sean Connery, Jill St. John and Charles Gray.

First edition of the fourth novel in Ian Flemingâs James Bond series, inscribed to two-time Oscar winner Leslie Bricusse by Sean Connery, Shirley Bassey and John Barry. Octavo, bound by in full crushed levant morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, raised bands, inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Association copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper, "With love Shirley Bassey" "John Barry". Best wishes Sean Connery. Leslie Bricusse has neatly written in black ink and underlined in red ink Shirley Bassey (singer of title song), John Barry (Composer), Sean Connery (James Bond). The recipient, Leslie Bricusse was a celebrated British composer, lyricist, and playwright known for his work on theater musicals and film theme music. Some of his most notable contributions include writing the music and lyrics for films such as Doctor Dolittle, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, Scrooge, Willy WonkaÂ& the Chocolate Factory,ÂandÂTom and Jerry: The Movie.ÂHe also co-wrote the iconic James Bond film songs "Goldfinger" and "You Only Live Twice". Additionally, Bricusse co-wrote "Can You Read My Mind? (Love Theme from Superman)" with John Williams for Superman and "Le Jazz Hot!" with Henry Mancini forÂVictor/Victoria. Sir Sean Connery was a renowned actor, best known as the first actor to portray the fictional British secret agent James Bond on film. He starred in seven Bond films between 1962 and 1983. Connery originated the role in Dr. No (1962) and continued with From Russia with Love (1963), Goldfinger (1964), Thunderball (1965), You Only Live Twice (1967), and Diamonds Are Forever (1971). He made his final appearance as Bond in Never Say Never Again (1983). Dame Shirley Bassey is a celebrated singer renowned for her powerful voice, career longevity, and her performance of theme songs for three James Bond films, making her the only artist to do so. Born in Cardiff, Bassey began performing as a teenager in 1953. In 1959, she became the first Welsh person to achieve a number-one single on the UK Singles Chart. Over the following decades, she accumulated 27 Top 40 hits in the UK, including two number-one singles ("As I Love You" and "Climb Ev'ry Mountain/Reach For The Stars") and a number one on the Dance Chart ("History Repeating"). Bassey is best known for recording the iconic theme songs for the James Bond filmsÂGoldfingerÂ(1964),ÂDiamonds Are ForeverÂ(1971), andÂMoonraker (1979). She remains one of the most popular vocalists in Britain.ÂJohn Barry Prendergast OBE was an acclaimed English composer and conductor of film music. Born in York, Barry spent his early years working in cinemas owned by his father. During his national service with the British Army in Cyprus, he began performing as a musician after learning to play the trumpet. After completing his national service, he formed a band in 1957 called the John Barry Seven. Barry's interest in composing and arranging music led to his television debut in 1958. Barry's association with the James Bond film series began when the makers of the first James Bond film,ÂDr. No,Âwere dissatisfied with the theme provided by Monty Norman. Noel Rogers, the head of music at United Artists, approached Barry, which started a successful 25-year collaboration with the Bond series. Barry composed the scores for eleven James Bond films between 1963 and 1987 includingÂDiamonds are ForeverÂandÂGoldfinger,Âand he arranged and performed the iconic "James Bond Theme" for the series' first film, Dr. No (1962). Gibert A4a (i.i.). DB 05933. In fine condition. An exceptional example, most rare and desirable signed. Diamonds are Forever was first published by Jonathan Cape in March 1956, and the first printing quickly sold 12,500 copies. These sales expanded further when Prime Minister Anthony Eden visited Fleming's Jamaican Goldeneye estate (Lindner, 2009). Of course, the sales are owed mostly to the novel's suspenseful plot and themes. The dust cover of the first edition can, in some sense, be seen an allusion to these themes. On Diamonds are Forever, designed by Pat Marriot, we see a tame image of an elegant woman wearing a large diamond. Towards the end of the novel, Fleming writes "Death is forever. But so are diamonds." Diamonds are metaphorical for death, and Bond is death's messenger because he carries the diamonds from London to New York. This is reflective of the immense novelty diamonds had to the British populous at that time (Benson, 1988). The Observer would write, "[Bond is] one of the most cunningly synthesised heroes in crime-fictionMr. Fleming's method is worth noting, and recommending: he does not start indulging in his wilder fantasies until he has laid down a foundation of factual description." It was the basis for the 1971 film bearing the same name directed by Guy Hamilton starring Sean Connery, Jill St. John and Charles Gray.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Diamonds are Forever, Ian Fleming, first edition, first impression (with 'Boofy' for 'Dolly'), advance presentation copy inscribed to Fleming's friend John Hayward; Jonathan Cape 1956. Inscribed with the words 'For John & his blue pencil from Ian'. A superb example of his rarely inscribed novel, the fourth James Bond book. The words 'his blue pencil' refer to John Hayward's important role as an editor, proof-reader and checker of content - Hayward went through the manuscripts and made corrections to each Fleming novel prior to publication, and in this case, after publication. Indeed Hayward has made several corrections to the pages of this copy, listing each page where he has made a correction to the rear inflap of the jacket (see the photos). These corrections - including a missing full stop to the top of p91 which Hayward has identified and marked - represent changes made to subsequent printings. John Hayward was an important person in literary London of the time; he was a close friend of TS Eliot and lived together with the poet in a flat in Chelsea, helping Eliot with editorial and textual revisions of his published works. Ian Fleming appointed Hayward as editor of the magazine The Book Collector in 1952, a position Hayward remained in till midway through the following decade. A highly significant association copy, inscribed to a person who occupied an important position making textual corrections to Fleming's works, as evinced by the dedication and the corrections made by Hayward to the existing text. The book is in near fine condition. Indeed the book is fine in virtually every respect: sharp corners, firm spine foot, very light pushing to spine tip, spotless black boards, no bumps to the board edges, bright silver book title, author name and publisher to the spine, no lean to the book which remains very firm; book is very clean inside, with a spotless and unmarked text block, no dog-eared pages, pages all being entirely smooth, with no tears, tugs or nicks. The only fault is a small puncture to the cloth of the front board, near the right edge; otherwise this is a lovely copy. The jacket is the correct first state jacket; not price-clipped. Rubbing to the edges, short closed-edge tear to top of front panel, light rubbing to the corners, small hole on front panel commensurate with the puncture to the cloth, and another small patch of rubbing above it, clean jacket verso. Very slight toning to the spine, but otherwise a very good jacket. Presented in a collector's black cloth clamshell box. For buyers outside the UK, please contact me for a postage quote as this is a high value book. Thank you. Inscribed by Author(s).
