Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. "The book, "Dictionary of Botany" is an attempt to give the first hand information and knowledge to the beginners in the subject. The book has been written in a very simple and lucid language and illustrated with relevant examples wherever possible. The terms have been explained fully and at length. The human-being has always been concerned and associated with the plants. He is now more conscious about the plants which constitute the human environment. Although, the work of writing ' Dictionary of Botany' is not an easy task and requires a lot of patience and stamina. The author has made very sincere efforts to bring out the possible meaning of different terms in the simplest way. Some of the related terms have also been included in the present text which were felt very essential under the purview of botany. It is earnestly hoped that the present book will prove useful to the botanists, agriculturists, foresters, students, and all others whosoever is interested in the subject." (jacket) No. 30628 375 pp.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. First edition (xxxi, 480) with two engraved plates (System of Botany, Elevation of Greenhouse). Octavo, in modern brown three-quarter leather over marbled paper covered boards, five raised bands, gilt lettering and titles to spine, matching endpapers. The breathless title relieves me of the responsibility of summarizing the contents of this scarce book by a 'Nusery-man of Glocester'; Fussell (More, 68) makes passing reference, noting the nursery, at least, did well enough and was still being carried on by a daughter into the 1820's. A handsome modern binding and a clean text. A very nice copy indeed of a scarce work.

First Edition. First edition of the first separately published botanical dictionary in the United States, 12mo, pp. vi, [7]-14, [160]; includes the final leaf of Howe ads for botanical works; recent half calf over marbled boards, gilt-ruled spine; dampstains in gutter, some offsetting; very good and sound. The work was translated by Amos Eaton (1776-1842) who gave up law to study botany, and "placed himself under the tutelage of Professors Ives [to whom the book is dedicated] and Silliman of Yale." In 1817 he moved to Massachusetts and began a series of public lectures on botany and geology. He helped establish the N.Y. State Geological Survey, and made a geological and agricultural survey of Albany and Van Rensselaer counties. Eaton, "through his enthusiasm did more perhaps than any one man of his time in arousing a popular interest in science" (see DAB). Shaw & Shoemaker 40721.
