Add to basketHardback. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. 1st UK, 1st impression. Signed by the author to the front end paper. Such a special book, it won the Whitbread prize for children's literature and was then adapted into the BBC TV series "Kizzy" (first aired in 1976) and later a BBC Radio production. A wise, sensitive and kindly author, Godden here combines themes of identity, exclusion and redemption into a tremendously satisfying (and instructive) read for older children. This copy is very good to fine overall with no marks or inscriptions other than the author's signature (with no dedication), with some spotting to text block edges, not intruding to pages. The (price-clipped) jacket is a little worn to the top edge, with a small closed tear to the top RH corner front, but retains its beautiful colouring and superb wrap-around illustration. Very rare in this format; all now protected in full Brodart wrapper.

Add to basketA first edition, first printing of 'The Diddakoi' by Rumer Godden, published by Macmillan in 1972. A very good book with a neat name to the head of the endpaper. In a very good clipped wrapper with some light edgewear and two short closed tears to the head of the front panel. The Diddakoi by Rumer Godden is a poignant story about Kizzy, a half-Romani (diddakoi) orphan girl who struggles to find acceptance in a prejudiced, close-knit English village. Raised by her fiercely independent great-great-aunt and their beloved horse, Kizzy faces bullying and hostility when her aunt dies. The book explores themes of identity, resilience, and belonging as Kizzy's life intertwines with both cruelty and unexpected kindness. Godden's lyrical writing paints a vivid picture of Kizzy's world, balancing the hardships she endures with the eventual compassion of others. It's a moving tale of courage and humanity in the face of adversity.
