First edition, the scarcer "Free" issue, of the final collective publication by the Diggers, a radical community-action group of activists and street theatre actors operating in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district during the late 1960s. Contributors include Peter Berg, Neal Cassady (anonymously), Richard Brautigan (whose poem "All Watched Over By Machine of Loving Grace" appears here), Allen Ginsberg, Emmett Grogan, Paul Krassner, and Gary Snyder. The magazine was published between 1965-8. This issue of The Digger Papers was published in two versions: one distributed by the Diggers with "Free" on the cover, and the other distributed by The Realist as issue #81 (August 1968) with a different cover layout. Brautigan, along with poet Michael McClure, would sometimes stand on Haight Street and hand out the free publications to passers-by. Quarto, 24 pp. Illustrated in black and white. Original buff printed wrappers. A little edgewear, usual toning, one tip negligibly creased; near-fine.
