Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Quarto 30x4x22 cm., cloth, 312 pages, in an edition of 1000, with a signed lithograph by Zrzavy, numerous color tipped in reproductions and b/w photo reproductions, in dust jacket. A catalogue raisonné of the work of Zrzavy to date, this book also was a strong rallying-point of Czech national pride under the oppression of the German occupation and dismemberment of the country. Jan Zrzavy (1890-1977) was one of the strong personalities of the Czech modern art world. He lived through and participated in many of the Czech movements, beginning with Sursum in 1910 through Devetsil and thereafter stood out as an isolated individual pursuing his own path away from the avant-garde movements of constructivism and surrealism. He was tolerated under both the Nazis and communists, largely because they found his work politically inoffensive, but they failed to understand the strong undercurrent of his championing a spiritual and especially Czech spiritual mentality and he, like the illustrator Josef Lada, came to represent what many Czechs like to consider unique to themselves. At the point this book was published, Zrzavý had executed a portrait of Karel Hynek Mácha, the famous Bohemian poet of the 19th century who was seen to rescue the Czech language from near-extinction. This image became a clandestine point of power and furthered a will to survive under continued denigrating circumstances. The book had a similar value to the reading public. This is a rare book, in very good condition overall, with a clipped upper dust wrapper. 2500.00. Signed by Illustrator(s).
