Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression with full number line. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, IN HEAVY BLACK PEN, WITHOUT DEDICATION, ON TITLE PAGE. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners very slightly bruised, large sticker to bottom of map endpaper ffep, not price clipped (£17.99), no other inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy. 403pp. And then the night when my life began again A strange beginning. Soldiers, bright lights. The cold, and me being lifted, as if by surgeons, into a new world. It is winter, somewhere in the United Kingdom, and an eight year old boy is removed from his home in the middle of the night. He soon learns that he is the victim of an extraordinary political experiment. A vision, a fable, a satire, a love story, a ghost story 'Divided Kingdom' is a remarkable, genre defying novel and it confirms Rupert Thomson as that rare thing, a writer of sublime prose who also has a mesmerising tale to tell. Jacket by William Webb (illustrator). Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Van der Kiste, John. A divided kingdom : the Spanish monarchy from Isabel to Juan Carlos. First edition. Stroud: Sutton Publishing, 2007. Hardback, Fine, in unclipped dustjacket. Black cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Binding strong and tight. viii, 248pp., cental section of b/w plates, genealogical tree. Contents clean and bright. There is little available on the dramatic and colourful history of the Spanish monarchy. Experienced author and historian John Van der Kiste provides a readable and anecdotal look at one of the key European dynasties from the nineteenth century to the present. He begins with the wayward, ill-educated Isabella II, who was forced to marry her nephew. During much of her reign power was in the hands of her generals and her exile and abdication saw the crown of Spain hawked round Europe for two years. It was briefly accepted then refused by Prince Leopold of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen - thus starting the Franco-Prussian War - and, after a short, unsuccessful stint as a republic, the monarchy was restored when Isabella's son Alfonso XIII was chosen as King. John Van der Kiste leads us through his popular reign, the reign of his son - who married one of Queen Victoria's granddaughters - and the socialist movement in Spain after the Great War which led to the dictatorship of Primo de Rovera. Finishing with the Spanish Civil War, the 'reign' of General Franco and the return of the monarchy with the present King, Juan Carlos, this is a fascinating look at the Spanish Bourbons. RightWayUp Books aims to provide accurate and detailed descriptions. All images are of the actual book for sale - no stock images are ever used. Thank you for looking at this listing.
