Assembled posthumously and published thirteen years after Thomas s death, this collection brings together five dramatic works three radio scripts and two film treatments. Included are "The Doctor and the Devils," based on the Burke and Hare murders and later filmed in 1985; "Twenty Years A-Growing," an unproduced adaptation of Maurice O'Sullivan's memoir; and "A Dream of Winter," first broadcast by the BBC in 1946. "The Doctor and The Devils" was adapted for film in 1985, directed by Freddie Francis and starring Timothy Dalton, Jonathan Pryce, Stephen Rea, Julian Sands, Patrick Stewart and Twiggy. The 1985 film was based upon the true story of Burke and Hare, who in 1828 Edinburgh, murdered at least 16 people and sold their bodies for anatomical dissection. The film was produced by Mel Brooks from a script adapted by Ronald Harwood from the unproduced screenplay by Dylan Thomas. A previous attempt to film the script in 1965, by director Nicholas Ray, had failed due to production troubles.
