Laminated, illustrated stiff card covers. 4to. Some gentle edge wear to card covers, a little rubbed in places on extreme edges. Internally neat, clean, bright and tight. A bookmark from the Parliamentary Bookshop loosely laid in. Most who see the House of Commons chamber for the first time think that it is very old. But in fact it is a modern building, which replaced the Victorian Chamber destroyed by enemy action in May 1941. This book tells the story of the destruction and rebuilding of the Chamber, and relives in pictures the wartime and austerity years in Parliament. Jennifer Tadfield, assistant Librarian in the House of Commons Library when she wrote this book, went on to become the first female House of Commons Librarian, serving in that role from 1993 until her retirement in 1999, after 36 years of service in the Library.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. document measures 17 x 11 inches, very clean. Embossed seal and ribbon of the state of Kentucky. A 1934 great depression era appointment doc signed by governor Ruby Laffoon, naming novelist Hugh Kahler to aide-de-camp and the rank of colonel. Laffoon was known for appointments to colonel, and according to the wiki below, "Among his gubernatorial legacies was appointing a record number of Kentucky colonels, including Harland Sanders, who used the title "Colonel" when he opened his chain of Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants." To be sent rolled in tube. uby Laffoon (January 15, 1869 March 1, 1941) was an American politician who served as the 43rd Governor of Kentucky from 1931 to 1935. A Kentucky native, at age 17 Laffoon moved to Washington, D.C., to live with his uncle, U.S. Representative Polk Laffoon. He developed an interest in politics and returned to Kentucky, where he compiled a mixed record of victories and defeats in elections at the county and state levels. In 1931, he was chosen as the Democratic gubernatorial nominee by a nominating convention, not a primary, making him the only Kentucky gubernatorial candidate to be chosen by a convention after 1903. In the general election, he defeated Republican William B. Harrisonby what was then the largest margin of victory in Kentucky gubernatorial history. Dubbed "the terrible Turk from Madisonville,"[1] Laffoon was confronted with the economic difficulties of the Great Depression. To raise additional revenue for the state treasury, he advocated the enactment of the state's first sales tax. This issue dominated most of his term in office and split the state Democratic Party and Laffoon's own administration. The lieutenant governor, A. B. "Happy" Chandler, led the fight against the tax in the legislature. After the tax was defeated in two regular legislative sessions and one specially called legislative session, Laffoon forged a bipartisan alliance to get the tax passed in a special session in 1934. Laffoon's feud with Lieutenant Governor Chandler continued throughout his term and affected the 1935 gubernatorial race. (At the time, the lieutenant governor was elected independently from the governor.) Term-limited by the state constitution, Laffoon supported political boss Tom Rhea to succeed him as governor, and convinced the Democrats to again hold a nominating convention to choose their gubernatorial nominee. This would have greatly improved Laffoon's chances of hand-picking his successor. While Laffoon was on a visit to Washington, D.C., Chandler was left as acting governor under the provisions of the Kentucky Constitution. Chandler issued a call for a special legislative session to consider a mandatory primary election bill. Laffoon rushed back to the state to invalidate the call, but the Kentucky Court of Appeals upheld it as constitutional, and the primary law was passed. Chandler defeated Rhea in the primary, and went on to succeed Laffoon as governor. Following his term in office, Laffoon returned to his native Madisonville, where he died of a stroke in 1941. Among his gubernatorial legacies was appointing a record number of Kentucky colonels, including Harland Sanders, who used the title "Colonel" when he o. Signed by Author(s). Book.

His breakthrough collection, a quietly eloquent portrait of Harlem, and one of the most influential documents emanating from The Photo League. "All in all, a labor of love, care, and devotion, worthy of its great subject. The comparisons that have been made to 'The Sweet Flypaper of Life' (by Roy de Carava and Langston Hughes) are entirely justified" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Aaron Siskind collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Aaron Siskind. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great photography book. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Edition/First Printing (Softcover) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: The Softcover Edition was issued simultaneously as the Hardcover. Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. Add to basketPrinted oath certificate titled The Oath of a Free Burgess of the Town of Liverpool, completed in manuscript for John Rimmer, described as a barkeeper, and dated August 31, 1837. The document sets out the formal obligations of a freeman of the town under the authority of the Crown, reflecting civic duties, trade privileges, and legal responsibilities within Liverpool during the early Victorian period. The printed text shows contemporary manuscript corrections updating the monarch from King William to Queen Victoria, placing the document at the moment of transition between reigns in 1837. The lower section is completed by hand with the recipient's name, occupation, and date, and bears an original ink signature of the Town Clerk. Presented framed and glazed. The document shows light age toning and minor spotting consistent with early nineteenth century paper. The reverse retains framing board and label for a Liverpool carver and gilder. Documents of this type were issued to confirm civic and commercial status within one of Britain's most important port cities. Surviving examples provide a direct insight into the structure of trade, governance, and urban life in nineteenth century Liverpool.
