Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. London: Heinemann. 1939. 8vo. First edition. Publisher's plum cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in the dust jacket. A very good or better copy, the cloth clean and bright, the gilt slightly dulled, the spine tips a trifle bumped. The binding tight and square, some mild spots to the textblock edges. The contents clean without inscriptions or stamps, with some light and even toning throughout, slightly more acute to the endpapers and prelims. The dust jacket priced 4s 6d net to the spine, complete with a couple of small closed tears and one larger tear to rear corner, and tiny chips around the spine head and tail. Tape repair to verso at head, but an attractive copy overall. An intriguing novel by this all-but forgotten author, remembered almost exclusively for her well-received Hubin-listed mystery, The Forgotten Terror (1938). This, her second novel, follows 'gay gentle Veronica' and her archeologist husband on a visit a French chateau where she is transported back to the fourteenth century, and transformed into 'a wild, beautiful, and passionate creature'. Uncommon.
