This was Leslie Thomas's penultimate novel set in the summer of 1940, during the tense days following the evacuation of Dunkirk. The story captures the lives of ordinary people in Dover as they navigate the looming threat of war while trying to find moments of love and hope. The novel follows several characters, including Toby Hendry, a fighter pilot awaiting orders, who falls for Giselle, a young Frenchwoman who fled occupied France with English troops. Meanwhile, reserve naval commander Paul Instow, feeling too old for war, finds solace in his relationship with Molly, a young Dover prostitute. Alongside them, three boys?Harold, Spot, and Boots?dream of fighting the German invaders, armed only with catapults and a stolen Bren gun. Thomas paints a vivid picture of wartime Britain, blending romance, resilience, and the stark realities of conflict. Ref SS 5. Signed by Author(s).
