Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (first printing). Large 4to. Original publisher's cloth portfolio, gilt lettered and ruled, housing twelve superb chromolithographed plates by Gottlob Moré. The folder is spotted, marked and a little chafed at corner tips. Lacking the loose-leaved dedication and contents pages, but the plates themselves are in super state with just a little minor staining to the extreme edges of several, and a hint of light spotting to several margins (not impacting the illustrations). The plates are titled in German and English, the English titles are as follows: 1) 'Porter of the Royal Picture Gallery', 2) 'Royal Coachman', 3) 'Royal Sedanchair-Bearers', 4) 'Mailcoach Driver', 5) 'Droschkeyman in Winter Costume', 6) 'Street Porter', 7) 'Cracknel Seller', 8) 'Chimney Sweeps', 9) 'Wendish Nurse', 10) 'Milkwoman', 11) 'Flower Stall in the Market', 12) 'Flower Hawkers'.

The chromolithographs depict a porter at the Royal Picture Gallery, a royal coachman, royal sedan-chair bearers, a mailcoach driver, a coachman in winter dress, a street porter, street vendors of bread and flowers, chimney sweeps, a Wendish nurse, a milkwoman, and a lovely street flower stall.

From the gallery porter to the mail coach driver to the droschkeyman (that mustache!) to the flower seller, all are included in this slice-of-German life, captured in their late 19th century moment (the first sheet dedicates the work to King Albert of Saxony). Colors are bright and still shiny with edges of pages slightly browned, a few smudges, some corners slightly bent. Portfolio boards half green/white with gilt line down middle, title in gilt. Century-plus evident on front/reverse with scuffs, spots, smudges, bit of paper stuck near top of front cover. Head/toe of spine frayed. Top interior flap hanging on, others gone. Good condition. Lithographs very good condition.
