This ethnographic account shows that Durga Puja in the countryside was a very different event from the modern version of the puja, one that symbolized legitimacy and counterposed generous redistribution against the ruthless collection of revenues. The offerings and sacrifices that were integral to the traditional pujas provided communion for the landholding families as well as their dependents in the community. Among the many features of the puja that are peculiar to Bengal is the notion that autumn is the night of the gods when worship is untimely , that spring is the proper time for the observance.

In this volume, Peter Bjørn Franceschi presents a visual diary of the mother goddess in the making. The book takes us through the winding lanes of Kumartuli, home to the master artists who craft the clay idols of the Devi for the Durga Pujo. Accompanying these photographs are verses from Sankaracharya s poetic work in Sanksrit, Saundaryalahari (Waves of Beauty), translated by the scholar Minati Kar. The work is a paean to the Goddess Durga, entwining Advaita Vedanta and Tantra philosophy to paint a splendid picture of Devi. Written by a Balinese historian this volume traces the long journey of images of the goddess Durga within India in the 1st millennium CE and then the long evolution of these images in Java and Bali beginning c.700 CE in the Early Mataram kingdom of ancient Java. In addition to being a historical study this volume also documents the author's personal journey. Raised in a rural village of Bali, the author experienced images of Durga as an awe-inspiring and terrifying goddess renowned as the patroness of the black arts. During a two-year period of work and study in India (2001-2003) the author was exposed to images of the goddess Durga that depict her as a beautiful warrior goddess who protects the community of her worshippers. This work grows out of the author's experience of seeking to understand historical factors that led to the stark contrast of images of Durga that we see when comparing contemporary India and Bali. Dr. Ariati first traces the development of images of Durga in the 'great' and 'little' traditions of India, calling attention especially to the evidence of the Markandeya Purana for a movement of myths about the goddess from north to south India. She then traces the development of a unique 'Javanese pantheon' that includes images of Durga as a goddess who presides over the northern direction and protects the kingdom and reigning monarch from danger. Dr. Ariati then draws on the evidence of the Javanese exorcist text Sudamala and reliefs illustrating this work at Candi Tigawangi, a temple constructed c. 1406 CE by a branch of the Majapahit dynasty. Noting that this is the starting point for depictions of demonic forms of Durga in Java, Dr. Ariati calls attention to the special role played by a male authority figure who exorcizes a demonic form of the goddess Durga and returns her to her benign form as the goddess Uma, or Parvati. Dr. Ariati traces the further development of this exorcistic theme in the Calon Arang tale of Bali and images of the 'divine witch' Rangda. She concludes her study by drawing parallels between the demonization of female images in myth and ritual and a campaign of disinformation that led to the destruction of Indonesia's first women's movement during the tumultuous early years of the New Order government. The author makes frequent use of texts in the Old Javanese and Balinese languages that enrich her historical study by introducing themes common to Balinese understanding of Durga that she groups in terms of the three roles of the goddess in creation (Utpatti), preservation (Sthiti) and dissolution (Pralina).

From the turn of the twenty-first century, the festival has taken on a particular artistic dispensation that is unique to the contemporary city, demanding a new order of attention and analysis. Based on field-research conducted between 2002 and 2012, this book unravels the anatomy of this newly-configured 'art' event, by tracking the new production processes, the mounting trends of publicity and sponsorship as well as the practices of mass spectatorship that make for the transformed visual culture of the festival. This new visual aesthetic, it is argued, has become the most important marker of the rapidly mutating identity of today's Durga Puja in Kolkata, bringing into the fray new categories of artists and designers, new genres of public art, and new spaces for art production and reception in the city. The book's central concern lies in conceptualizing a specifically contemporary and artistic history of the urban festival. In keeping with its title, the book examines the diversity of images and practices - from the consumerist spectacle and the bonanza of awards to the efflorescence of public installations and art and craft productions - that unfurls in this season 'in the name of the goddess'. While profiling the Durga Pujas as Kolkata's biggest public art event, the book also addresses the ambivalence of the designations of 'art' and 'artist' in this field of production and viewership. One of the main aims of this study has been to lay open the claims of 'art' in this festival both as a set of insistent projections as well as a mesh of incomplete formations. The new artistic nomenclature of the festival, it is shown, is not easily secured and has to struggle to assert itself within the body of the religious event and the ephemeral mass spectacle.
