Two hardcover books without dustjackets, 573 pages, 28 plates in Volume I, 334 plates in Volume II, very good condition: Volume 1 has a thin line of white paper stuck on the spine; Volume 2 has a few creases to the upper right corner of most pages; but the creases to do affect the plates; Volume 2 also has some brown spots to the edges of the pages. Two-volume set, large format hardcovers with dustjackets, Volume 1 contains the text, several of the pages have pencil notations in the margins and some pencil underlining and the former owner's name is present on the inside of the front cover, the binding is clean and tight, no other remarkable book flaws, the jacket has a few short edge-tears and a short tape-mend on the top edge of the rear panel, mild rubbing to the surface which is common with most glossy jackets and moderate wear at the corners, the jacket is clean and remains presentable, the original price is present and a professional (removable) mylar cover is included, Volume 2 contains the black & white plates and is in excellent condition, the former owner's name on the inside of the front cover is the only remarkable flaw, the jacket has a couple of short edge-tears at the spine-ends, moderate rubbing to the glossy surface and mild tanning on the white front panel adjacent to the spine, it also presents well, the original price is present and a professional (removable) mylar cover is included, "Early Netherlandish Painting, his finest work in some forty years of extraordinary production, must be reckoned a masterpiece".

If you are seriously interested in Northern Renaissance art - work by Van Eyck, Rogier, Campin, Memling, etc. - you must read Panofsky. Although many of Panofsky's theories have since been challenged, he laid the groundwork for all subsequent studies of the work of this era.
