Provoked by urbanization and the rise of popular democratic rights, the western education system was overwhelmed by changes during the 19th century. Robert Owen found that he had a duty to educate his child work force through a sense of responsibility for the 'human machines' by which he was surrounded and as a result the nursery school evolved. Such attitudes did not even begin to touch the elite world of the university establishment which, it could be argued, remained the province of the aristocratic and wealthy ranks until the 1920s, an era which only really vanished with the expansion of further education during the 1960s. These writers provide the first insights into the change from the old system of classical learning to modern knowledge as a pursuit for its own sake. Octavo. vii, 109, (95)-159pp. Fine and unread. Russia had experienced educational reforms in the 1860s, but these were still limited: the universities had gained autonomy in 1861, yet the government restrictions were imposed on them again after only a five-year hiatus. While central government had standardised curricula and widened educational opportunities to the masses, the implementation was inevitably slow and meanwhile the debate on the nature and method of education was being thoroughly examined.Youmans' work comprises lectures from various thinkers including Herbert Spencer, Thomas Huxley, Michael Faraday, James Paget and John Tyndall on subjects ranging from physics, zoology and economics. 'In Youmans's (as in Spencer's) view, science would ultimately promote stability, order, morality, and certainty, not anarchical, amoral liberation from past constraints' (Mark Pittenger, "Youmans, Edward Livingston",American National Biography Online). Again, these discussions were increasingly relevant in a country where serfdom had been abolished a mere six years previously; ideas of national identity and enlightenment through education were particularly topical.See MacMinn, p. 98 (English edition of Inaugural address). Not in COPAC; not in National Library of Russia. KlappentextThis classic memoir brings the complete biography of the one of the greatest thinkers of the western philosophy. Mill is considered to be the most influential mind of liberalism. His work contributed greatly to the development.
Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - In 'The Subjection of Women,' John Stuart Mill presents a compelling argument for gender equality and women's rights, challenging the deeply entrenched norms of the 19th century. Written in a persuasive and systematic style, Mill's work is a cornerstone of feminist philosophy, exploring the moral, legal, and social implications of women's oppression. He employs empirical examples and philosophical reasoning to dismantle the justifications for subjugation while advocating for the emancipation and education of women, marking a significant departure from traditional views of the time. John Stuart Mill (1806-1873), a prominent English philosopher and political economist, was significantly influenced by the intellectual milieu of his upbringing, particularly by his father, James Mill, a close associate of Jeremy Bentham. His exposure to utilitarianism melded with his own progressive beliefs encouraged him to advocate for social reforms, including women's rights. Mill's partnership with feminist activist Harriet Taylor also shaped his views, as their collaboration infused his arguments with genuine empathy for women's experiences and aspirations. 'The Subjection of Women' is an essential read for anyone interested in the historical context of feminist theory and the ongoing struggle for gender equality. Mill's eloquent prose and groundbreaking insights provide a profound understanding of the relationships between gender, power, and justice, making this work both relevant and inspiring for contemporary readers.
Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - In 'John Stuart Mill: Life, Life Lessons & Achievements,' the reader is presented with a comprehensive exploration of Mill's intellectual journey and the profound impact of his philosophies on contemporary thought. Written in a clear, engaging style, this work delves into Mill's utilitarian ethics, his views on liberty, and the importance of individual freedom. The book contextualizes Mill within the 19th-century liberal movement, emphasizing how his challenges to traditional doctrines and advocacy for social reform resonate with modern societal dilemmas, creating a rich tapestry of ideas that are both historical and relevant today. John Stuart Mill, a consequential figure in liberal philosophy, was steeped in a tradition of rigorous intellectual inquiry, largely shaped by his father, James Mill, and the influential philosopher Jeremy Bentham. His upbringing in a utilitarian milieu coupled with personal experiences, including the tragedy of losing close family members, inspired Mill's reflections on happiness and human flourishing. This personal backdrop, along with his fervent commitment to social justice and women's rights, informs the thoughtful analysis and life lessons he conveys throughout this text. This book is an essential read for anyone interested in philosophy, political science, or social reform. It offers invaluable insights into Mill's profound contributions, crafted to enlighten both scholars and laypeople alike. Engaging with Mill's life lessons not only broadens our understanding of historical ideologies but also encourages reflection on our own moral choices and the ongoing quest for a just society.
