Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. Albert Einstein: Philosopher-Scientist (Library of Living Philosophers Series), edited by Paul Arthur Schilpp. Hardcover Second Edition, 4th Printing (printed 1957), in Good+ condition without a dust jacket. Blue cloth-covered boards feature a black title block near the head of the spine, complemented by gold lettering, including Einstein's signature embossed on the front cover. The covers remain in good shape, with a light 2-inch scratch near the bottom of the spine and a small frayed spot at the tail of the front edge, approximately 1.5 inches from the front corner. There is light rubbing to the corners and spine caps, and the spine print is slightly faded at the publisher's name. The binding exhibits a touch of flex, typical for thicker volumes of this kind, but the hinges are intact and unbroken. The front flyleaf shows minor abrasion. Interior pages are clean and unmarked, with light tanning consistent with the book's age (70+ years). This volume, part of the Library of Living Philosophers series, offers a comprehensive exploration of Albert Einstein's philosophical perspectives and scientific contributions. It features essays by Einstein himself, as well as critical analyses from leading scholars, addressing his influence on physics, epistemology, and the broader scientific community. The book provides an illuminating glimpse into Einstein's mind, reflecting on his thoughts about the nature of scientific inquiry and its ethical implications. The book will be carefully packaged for shipment to protect it from the elements. USPS electronic tracking number issued free of charge. First edition, signed limited issue, number 547 of 760 copies signed and dated by Einstein. Issued on his 70th birthday, this handsomely produced volume includes the first appearance in print of Einstein's autobiography, specially written for the book and itself an important scientific contribution. In addition to the autobiographical notes, in which Einstein famously describes the awakening of his scientific curiosity when shown a compass as a child, the book presents a series of essays on Einstein's work and achievements by 25 of his contemporaries, including Niels Bohr, Max Born, Kurt Gödel, and Wolfgang Pauli. Several of these have become seminal papers in their own right: "Bohr's account of his discussion with Einstein has been called 'one of the great masterpieces of modern scientific reporting'" (Jammer, p. 136) and Gödel's "appears to be the only published piece by [him] that deals with philosophical issues not directly concerned with mathematics" (Feferman, p. 199). A bibliography of Einstein's writings is also included. Weil Appendix, p. 41. Solomon Feferman, introductory note to Gödel's Collected Works, vol. 2, 1990; Max Jammer, The Philosophy of Quantum Mechanics, 1974. Octavo. Portrait frontispiece after Yousuf Karsh and plate (facsimile of Einstein's handwriting and portrait in his studio with the editor). Original brown morocco-grain cloth over bevelled boards, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, gilt facsimile of Einstein's signature to front board, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. With original brown card slipcase. Gatherings occasionally unopened, slipcase faded and worn in places, some splits to paper-covered surface: a fine copy in very good slipcase.
