From the blurb: "As the eighteenth century progressed, provincial printing presses gradually challenged the London and Oxbridge monopoly. At first their trade was in commercial printing, in the provision of cheap popular literature, and sometimes in publishing a local news sheet. Manchester and Liverpool were early leaders in this movement, but between these two Warrington came to excel in the second half of the century. William Eyres was of the third generation of his family in this business; with his brother, still in their early 20s they launched a local newspaper, one of the earliest in Lancashire. This soon failed, but trade continued and probably owed much at this stage to their popular chap books. But then came the Warrington Academy, with its wealth of literary and academic talent; a thriving symbiosis soon developed. This author has argued that Warrington's academy was nothing less than a "stillborn University", challenging the Oxbridge monopoly for a season. With this in mind the story of Eyres' establishment is now presented as an "Embryo University Press," and so this account complements his Academy book. (1989)" Signed by the author on the front free endpaper. Very Good in Very Good dustwrapper.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. Frontispiece, xiii, [1], 264 pp; 17 figs. Original cloth. Top and vertical fore edges of pages is foxed (see photos). Very Good, in dust jacket. This copy does NOT have any library markings. First Edition. INSCRIBED BY G. EVELYN HUTCHINSON on flyleaf: "D de S P/ olim cantibrigensi/ G. E. H." (see photo). I cannot prove it, but it is highly likely that "D de S P" was Derek De Solla Price. Derek Price joined the faculty at Yale University in 1959. Evelyn Hutchinson had been a member of the Yale Faculty since 1928, so Price and Hutchinson were Yale colleagues. The inscription by Hutchinson to Price refers to Cambridge (but didn't GEH make a mistake and it should be "cantibrigiensi"?). Hutchinson himself was born and raised in Cambridge and received his degree in zoology from Cambridge in 1925. He chose not to get a Ph.D. degree. Derek Price received his Ph.D. in physics, but then moved into the history of science and received a second Ph.D., this one from Cambridge in 1954. So Hutchinson and Price each received a degree from Cambridge, but they were never at Cambridge at the same time. Their time together was at Yale. George Evelyn Hutchinson, born on 13 January 1903 in Cambridge, is considered by many to be the father of modern ecology because he infused the science with theory that was anchored in natural history. When called the father of ecology in 1973 on receiving the very first Tyler Prize, he instantly demurred, saying that credit should go to Darwin and Charles Elton, and further that what he was really proud of was the string of wonderfully bright students who had studied with him. Nonetheless in many senses and to a major extent Hutchinson can be credited with transforming natural history into a science. He spent most of his professional years at Yale and returned to England in 1991 for the last months of his life (Thomas Lovejoy, Biographical Memoir of Fellows of the Royal Society). ISBN 0300022727. But another Dorothea who might heve been the recipient is Dorothea Rudnick (see the photo on p. 346 of Nancy Slack's biography of Hutchinson, in which Dorothea Rudnick was at a birthday celebration for Hutchinson in 1985). I do not know (yet) who D.M. was.
